The ever-charismatic Groot is easily a fan-favorite Guardians of the Galaxy character despite his vocal limitations. Much like any good Pokémon, he is incapable of vocalizing much more than his own name in English, with almost all his dialogue consisting of "I am Groot." Though that may not sound like much to most, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are more than a few characters who seem to be able to make sense of what he means in spite of his limited vocabulary, as seen in Avengers: Infinity War.

So, of course, some enterprising Marvel fans have also tried to decipher Groot's dialogue for themselves, under the reasonable assumption that if it means something to the characters around him, they must be able to derive his meaning from context. A video recently made the rounds with subtitles theorizing a few lines from Avengers: Infinity War, including a couple with a young Groot traveling through space with Thor and Rocket, his appearance at Wakanda, and of course, his final words as he gets erased from existence by Thanos.

The theorized lines seem like reasonable guesses, including things like "How long till we get there?" addressed to Thor as they travel and his last word being "Dad?" to Rocket as he vanishes. In a surprise twist, however, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, saw the video himself and had some thoughts about the fan translation.

According to Gunn, the script for Groot always contains the exact translations of what he is saying, likely so the other characters know how to react appropriately. This means he could easily fact-check the video by comparing it to his own copy of the Avengers: Infinity War script. His final word is, indeed, "Dad?" as Gunn has confirmed this in the past, but the director also said that the other subtitles are close, though they didn't quite hit the nail on the head.

As an interesting additional fact, Gunn also confirmed that Vin Diesel, Groot's voice actor, always has access to the lines in order to get the proper tone and inflection across correctly. Gunn also complimented the fan translation, commending them for getting so close without access to the actual scripts.

It seems that for the time being, Groot's exact words and intent are meant to be lost on audiences, and while people can always guess, it's impossible, or at least unlikely, to predict his exact intentions. In the meantime, fans will just have to do their best and hope it makes sense in context.
