While Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix's upcoming Marvel's Avengers title may not have impressed everybody at its grand unveiling at E3 this year, the slew of information to come out about the game since then has begun to win some people over. Recently, journalists were able to get a hands-on feel of it and the 20 minute prologue level was shared online to help fans get a better idea of what the game is like. But there is still plenty we don't know about it, including who the DLC characters will be. It was confirmed at E3 that Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix intend to support the title for a long time and intend to make every new playable character unique.
Crystal Dynamics' Head of Studio Scot Amos, while speaking with journalists, explained that they don't view the current selection of playable characters - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and Black Widow - as just classes or roles that can be simply replicated for future characters.
"We want to make sure it feels like, 'Wow this is who this character should play like.' So it’s not like, 'Oh this is just a reskinned version of X, Y, Z. That wouldn’t be fun for us. There are so many unique purposes for each different Avenger, we don’t think about them as class and style. We say, 'What’s great about this hero, what’s great about this character?'"
Amos added as to why the developers want to make these new characters distinct and not share move-sets with other characters:
"We want it to feel like, I won’t mention a name, but this hero feels like...'Ah that’s the dream that I want for that character.' Because if it starts feeling like reskins, that’s no fun. But the idea of having tons of skills and their own unique heroics and their own storylines. because remember [new heroes] come with storylines for what they’re doing in this world. So we need to make sure each hero feels unique as each hero, even the ones that add on past launch."
It's currently unknown as to which characters will be joining Avengers post-launch, with the exception of Hank Pym, who in the comics went under the names Ant-Man and Yellowjacket. We know very little about how he'll play, though, and the brief footage of him showed him wielding a shrinking ray of some kind, as opposed to shrinking himself down to fight villains. It's also theorized that Kamala Khan AKA Ms. Marvel will be made playable as she is shown in the prologue being affected by the Terrigen mist, which is what gave her superpowers in the comics.
Recently, alternate costumes were also confirmed for the game, including a Secret Empire outfit for Captain America and a suit for Hulk, though a couple others were leaked online.
Marvel's Avengers will be released on May 15th 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia.
