Avatar: The Way of Water has now overtaken director J.J. Abram's first new Star Wars sequel, The Force Awakens, as it continues to vacuum up the dollars like a contestant on a wacky game show.

The battle of the box office continues, and James Cameron, the only man capable of creating massive juggernaut earners anymore, continues to stomp through the landscape. The tally for his Avatar: The Way of Water grows by the day, ensuring his multi-sequel plan for the franchise will come to fruition (as if having its own Disney zoo park wasn’t enough)

Per Deadline, Avatar: The Way of Water surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens upon earning nearly $2.075 billion globally. In doing so, Avatar: The Way of Water climbed to the number four spot on the list of all-time highest-grossing movies, sailing past The Force Awakens' $2.071 billion global haul. At the international box office, Avatar 2 still ranks as the number 4 highest-grossing movie. Domestically, the film sits at number 13, though Disney executives probably aren't fretting.

This means Cameron has now gone on to have the top three highest-grossing movies of all time, with Titanic and his two Avatar films sitting at the top of the all-time money-makers list when it comes to films. Right now, Avatar 2 sits right behind Titanic, but soon the sinking ship movie will get demoted to the number four position while Cameron shores up his sequels and plans more diving trips to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Cameron's box office tally will be joined by Avatar 3, shot simultaneously with Way of Water. The wrassling over which film is on top will get steamier than Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in an old-timey car.

With the recent announcement that Avatar 2 passed Avengers: Infinity War, the top global box office has now come down to Disney vs Disney vs Disney, with each of its divisions, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Fox left fighting over who can come up with the most toyetic, money-making film for the year. All of them are in the upper half of the top grosser, no matter what happens. That leaves horror movies to make up a lot of the slack for other studios, like M3GAN making bank or the Conjuring series being the only other successful shared universe franchise out there at the moment, and even then, they’re only earning a minuscule fraction of what Avatar: The Way of Water makes.
