Avatar: The Way of Water keeps making money, and now James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster has broken past the $2 billion barrier as it looks to climb up more spots on the list of highest-grossing films of all time.

Avatar 2 passed Spider-Man: No Way Home last week, which makes the Avengers, Star Wars, and Cameron's own Titanic the next names on its hitlist now that Avatar 2 is one week away from its 45-day release cycle. Avatar: The Way of Water indeed benefited from an extended theatrical window in China, where Avatar is incredibly popular, that will see the film stay in the country well past this weekend’s Lunar New Year celebrations until mid-February.

As Collider reports, Avatar: The Way of Water reached $2.024 billion worldwide. $598 million came from the domestic box office, where it has done slightly worse - comparatively speaking - and it sits at number 13 in the all-time rankings. This is far from the only milestone obtained by Cameron's Avatar 2, as the movie’s $227 million IMAX earnings also see it pass Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the second-biggest film ever in the format, right behind the first Avatar.

News of all these accomplishments will surely make Cameron happy. However, the director has already confirmed that Avatar: The Way of Water met its financial objectives, meaning the rest of the sequel he has in mind can be made. Under current projections, Avatar: The Way of Water's revenue could climb as high as number three in the all-time rankings, whereas Titanic is currently sitting comfortably at $2,187 billion before its 25th anniversary rerelease this Valentine’s Day.

Regardless of what one thinks of Avatar's story, it’s beyond debate that the visual spectacle Cameron delivers in Avatar: The Way of Water is enough to excite moviegoers so that they feel the film is something they truly can’t miss. Avatar: The Way of Water's achievements saw it trump Top Gun: Maverick as 2022’s biggest movie. However, it will be interesting to see if Disney grants Avatar 2 an extended release in cinemas, much like Paramount Pictures did to further capitalize on the latter's popularity.

While Avatar: The Way Way of Water at-home viewing is inevitable, and Cameron has given his blessing when it comes to watching it from home, the director's influence and the movie's success could see the studio make an exception that delays its streaming release.
