Almost a decade and a half after Sozin's Comet aired on television, Avatar: The Last Airbender is finally going to have a continuation of its story from Paramount, and it's coming in 2025.

Outside the comic book series that have been coming with new issues, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Avatar Aang and his friends ever since the show ended in 2008. Even though the details regarding the story continue to remain in the dark, at least fans know that something is definitely coming in the form of an animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie.

Paramount has announced that an Avatar: The Last Airbender film sequel to the series will be coming out on October 10, 2025, but no details emerged regarding what the film will be about or who will be returning to the series. Even though Avatar's sequel series, The Legend of Korra, technically continued the story, the show didn't go much into what happened to Avatar Aang and his pals after the events of Sozin's Comet. However, a few of the show's alumni like Katara, Zuko, and Toph all made appearances as the older versions of themselves when conversing with Korra.

It'll be interesting to see how they do the casting for the upcoming movie. The voice actor for Aang, Zachary Tyler Eisen, retired from the industry right after the show ended, and of course, he can't do the voice anymore since he's no longer a child. Other actors who participated in the show, like Mae Whitman (Katara), Dante Basco (Zuko), Grey DeLisle (Azula) and Mark Hamill (Ozai) remain in the industry and could probably still do the voices. Jack Desena (Sokka) and Michaela Jill Murphy (Toph) still go to comic cons where they are celebrated primarily for the voices they provided for their iconic characters, so they would probably embrace potentially returning as their characters.

All that remains is knowing where the show will pick up from. The show's creators have an interest in doing a movie about the gang finding Zuko's mom after Ozai revealed that she was still alive. In the end, they did a graphic novel detailing where she had been throughout that time. One of the show's writers said there were plans for a fourth season where the focus was going to be on redeeming Azula as a character after she had lost everything, including her mind, in the show's finale. Since the comic book series for the show has developed more of the show's plotlines, it'll be interesting to see if they take those stories and put them in the movie or if they'll venture into new territories.

As exciting as it is to see the show get a reboot all these years later, fans have to consider that doing so could potentially mess with the reputation of not only arguably the greatest Nicktoon of all time, but one of the greatest shows ever made. Director M. Night Shyamalan already kinda did that with the live-action movie that came out 12 years ago, which the fanbase to this day acts like it never happened. Fans do not want to see such a phenomenal show get tarnished again, so if they're going to do this, they have to do it right. Luckily, they've got three years to figure it out.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender animated film will be released in theaters on October 10, 2025.
