The Genre and Development of Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandora

Is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora a Sequel to the 2009 Game?

Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandora is set to be an expansive first-person action adventure game, published by Ubisoft. The game promises to feature a truly immersive and open-world gameplay experience set within the diverse Avatar universe.

The game is being developed purely for next-generation consoles, meaning that hopeful players can expect a seriously high level of graphic fidelity and a focus on intricate and detailed interactive environments. The Frontiers of Pandora is being developed by Massive Entertainment, a subsidiary company of Ubisoft who is known for past work on the likes of Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed Revelations, and the Tom Clancy's The Division franchise. In conjunction with this, it has been confirmed that Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandora is going to utilize the latest iteration of the acclaimed Snowdrop game engine, which has become a staple of many Ubisoft titles.

The Story and Gameplay of Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandora

As many will know, Pandora is the name of the alien planet that was the primary setting of the 2009 Avatar film, and is an integral setting to the franchise as a whole. Pandora is the home to the indigenous Na'vi species, a tall, blue, and humanoid race that are the main focus of the franchise.

Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandora is predictably set on Pandora, more specifically the Western Frontier of the planet. With the planet being quite sizable, this Western Frontier is billed as an area of Pandora that has never been seen before, lending creative liberty for the developers to showcase stunning new facets of flora and fauna within this brand-new environment without being constricted to what appeared in the film.

The story of The Frontiers of Pandora will see players take control of a Na'vi who embarks on a journey across the aforementioned frontier, with a focus on dynamic exploration and interaction with the Pandora environment and other characters and entities. Like the film, the main antagonistic force within the game appears to be the forces of the RDA, a human organization. The RDA, who originally attempted to earn the trust of the Na'vi through telepathically-linked and lab-bred Na'vi bodies known as Avatars, have no qualms with slaughtering the Na'vi and desecrating their home-world in the pursuit of a rare element native to Pandora called Unobtainium.

With a long-awaited movie sequel to the original Avatar coming in the form of the recently confirmed Avatar: Way of Water, which is also set for a 2022 release date, it is clear that the Avatar franchise is poised to make a holistic return to the forefront of pop culture. It only makes sense that this film reboot be accompanied by a gaming reboot, with The Frontiers of Pandora set to offer a truly comprehensive experience that will only become more realized as the impending release date draws closer.

Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandora is set to release in 2022 for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X.
