While it has been over a decade since the first Avatar film, production on the four sequels is finally getting closer to wrapping up. With this news comes an idea of just how much these films will cost when all is said and done.

Avatar was a technical marvel at the time of its release in 2009, utilizing 3D technology to immerse viewers in the world of Pandora. While the film may have lacked in other areas, the effects employed were impressive. This led to it being the highest-grossing film of all time, until Avengers: Endgame stole that title last year.

With the first sequel slated for a December 2021 release—and films 3 through 5 of the series to follow biannually—the tally on costs reveals just what a massive undertaking this project has been for James Cameron and his team. The four sequels are estimated to cost about $1 billion dollars, an average of $250 million per film.

More details are emerging about the films, with fans being treated to some concept art as well as a peek behind the scenes showing off the underwater filming rig Cameron is making use of for the films.

With New Zealand easing its restrictions regarding COVID-19, the film industry in the country is open again, allowing Cameron to continue filming the Avatar sequels.

While fans have been waiting some time for these films to be released, the wait will soon be over. No concrete information on whether the Avatar video game from Massive Entertainment is anywhere near completion however...

Avatar 2 is expected to be released in theaters on December 17, 2021.
