The upcoming live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has added a new cast member to the growing team of talent. The Mandalorian and Kim's Convenience star Paul Sun-Hyung Lee will be playing Uncle Iroh.

Like Avatar: The Last Airbender fans know, Uncle Iroh is a fan-favorite character who had many points of wisdom that he gave during the course of the show, especially to his nephew Zuko. Iroh also had a very tragic and emotionally challenging backstory as one of the members of the fire nation. Hopefully, Netflix's telling of the story will keep the charm, humor, and backstory of this very popular character.

Sun-Hyung Lee's casting was announced in a Twitter post by Netflix, which also revealed that the roles of Gyatso and Commander Zhao will be played by Lim Kay Siu and Ken Leung, respectively. It already appears that Netflix's live-action Avatar series will be much closer to the source material than the original live-action film from director M . Night Shyamalan. That film has often been criticized by many fans and critics for the story direction, casting choices, and deviating from the Nickelodeon cartoon's main plot beats. Hopefully, Netflix's adaptation is received much better and honors the show it comes from, as opposed to changing the source material too dramatically.

The official description of Sun-Hyung Lee's character from Netflix reads, "Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (he/him; Kim’s Convenience, The Mandalorian) will play Uncle Iroh, a retired Fire Nation general and the wise and nurturing mentor to his hot-headed nephew, Prince Zuko." It seems like the famous quotes containing words of wisdom will return for this fan-favorite character. Netflix's live-action Avatar adaptation will also be a television series, so the plot won't be limited to the confines of a 120-minute long film. This will give it some breathing room to set the stage for many of its characters and allow more time for fight scenes to take place. Being able to have more than just the standard one or two fight scenes like most action movies do is a great sign for a show of this magnitude.

Hopefully, the series will breathe new life into the universe of Avatar so there can be more creations or even fan work. The original series ended on a perfect note, so it doesn't need a reboot. However, it would be nice for fans to get glimpses of other aspects of the world. Perhaps Netflix's show can bring the prolific series back into the spotlight.

On the other hand, many fans just want the original series to live on its own. It came and then got out of the way with a perfect ending. Hopefully, any return to the Avatar universe is something warranted or needed from fans and creators alike.

Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere exclusively on Netflix.
