A new game based in the world of James Cameron's Avatar was revealed during the 2021 Ubisoft Forward – Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.  The game will be a first-person open-world RPG that lets players explore areas of the Na'vi homeworld Pandora that haven't been featured in other Avatar media. The First Look trailer revealed gorgeous vistas and the vibrant, bioluminescent world of Pandora as it will be represented in the game.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot surprised audiences with the reveal of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora as the capstone of the company's E3 showcase during Ubisoft Forward. According to the game's listing on the Ubisoft store, it will allow players to engage with a story totally separate from the 2009 movie – which means Jake Sully probably won't make an appearance. Players control one of the Na'vi and explore the Western Frontier, a part of Pandora that has never been seen before, as they fight back against the encroaching forces of the Resource Development Administration.

Developer Massive Entertainment, a Ubisoft Studio, originally announced the start of development on a game set in the Avatar universe in early 2017. Massive Entertainment is building the game in its own Snowdrop engine to "deliver the wonders of Pandora to everyone" on modern consoles as well as on the Google Stadia and Amazon Luna cloud-based gaming devices. Massive Entertainment is known for its work on The Division series and other military-type games, though they helped develop Ubisoft RPGs like Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations as well.

Fans of 2009's Avatar have been eagerly awaiting more from the world of Pandora after years and years of teases from James Cameron on a possible sequel to the incredibly popular original film. The stunning new RPG will let players experience this world from a first-person perspective, rather than just watch a narrative play out on-screen. The capabilities of modern gaming systems have improved massively since 2009, too – Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be as close as hardcore fans can get to interact with the gorgeous world first seen 11 years ago.

The world of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is described as "living and reactive" whose new mechanics, creatures, and characters will all undoubtedly use the Snowdrop engine to its fullest extent. The only problem is, then, is convincing fans of the Avatar franchise that the universe is worth returning to after more than a decade with next-to-nothing. If the graphics of this First Look trailer are anything to go by, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be a visual spectacle worthy of being associated with one of the highest-grossing Sci-Fi movies of all time.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will release on an unannounced date in 2022 on Amazon Luna, Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
