The Attack on Titan series is chock-full of incredibly well-written, charismatic, and charming characters, all confined behind an encompassing wall on Paradis Island. As the story progresses, secrets are revealed that lead to the introduction of an array of new characters. A world where humanity is constantly under the threat of extinction requires honorable men and women to stand up for what is right.

10 Hannes

The drunken yet charismatic character of Hannes is one of Attack on Titan's most unexpected heroes. Though he was unable to save Carla Yeager from a Titan attack, he refused to allow any harm to come to her son, Eren as he carried him to safety.

During the Clash of the Titans arc, Hannes attempts to save Eren from the same Titan who ate his mother. He sees the battle as an opportunity to avenge Carla's death, but he is no match for the Titan's abilities. Even though the odds were against him, Hannes insisted on protecting Eren from harm knowing it would more than likely end with his demise.

9 Armin Arlert

Armin Arlert is the best tactician humanity has behind the walls. He has guided the Survey Corps to achieve countless victories with his logic and quick thinking, but his most notable plan revolved around a distraction.

Armin plans to sacrifice himself to distract the Colossal Titan long enough for Eren to strike the killing blow. He suffers severe burning from the steam released by the Colossal Titan but is given a second chance at life through the administering of the Titan injection.

8 Mikasa Ackerman

Descended from the Ackerman clan, Mikasa Ackerman, is regarded as one of the most skilled soldiers in the Survey Corps. She graduated from the 104th Training Corps at the top of her class, implying that she is the strongest out of all of her classmates, a fact the show constantly reminds the viewer of.

Unlike many characters in the series, Mikasa never hesitates. Upon discovering the identity of the Armored Titan and the Colossal Titan, Mikasa is the first to draw her blade and attack. Though she is placed in several other dire situations throughout the anime, the word "fight" is perpetually ringing in her ears, commanding her to bring humanity's foes to justice.

7 Hange Zoë

Hange is obsessed with studying titans to further improve humanity's chances of survival. She becomes a prominent character when she begins to study Eren's Attack Titan properties. Though she may seem unhinged, she has humanity’s best interests at heart.

Hange, with the assistance of several engineers, begins creating Thunder Spears, explosive devices capable of destroying the napes of advanced Titans. If not for Hange's research, all life on Paradis Island would have been eradicated much earlier in the story.

6 Sasha Braus

One of the most heroic characters in Attack on Titan is Sasha Braus, a southerner who is never satisfied with one meal. Upon returning to her hometown she comes across Kaya, a young girl who sits powerless in her own home as a medium-sized Titan slowly consumes her mother.

With no horse, she grabs Kaya's hand and sprints away with her before telling her to go on without her. She knows her arrows have no chance of defeating this being, so instead, she blinds it by firing one arrow in the Titan's left eye while lunging another into the right, giving her and Kaya ample time to escape. Sahsa's determination to save Kaya's life reveals that she is one of the most honorable characters in the series.

5 Levi Ackerman

Levi Ackermann from Attack on Titan

Renowned for his terrifying fighting abilities, Levi Ackerman is arguably the most powerful soldier seen throughout the entirety of Attack on Titan. Levi joins the scout regiment at Erwin's request on the sole condition that his past crimes will be forgiven.

Even after losing everything he held dear, Levi continued to fight for humanity's sake. He has protected Paradis Island from countless threats, saving many lives in the process. The number of titans he has bested during his life is unparalleled.

4 Dot Pyxis

His leadership skills and inspiring speeches influenced many characters to take up arms against the titans for humanity's sake, while his calm yet undeterred demeanor served to relax his comrades. He understood the fear felt by his peers and forgave them for fleeing when they did. He is one of humanity's greatest allies.

3 Theo Magath

Theo Magath was introduced in the 60th episode of Attack on Titan titled "The Other Side of the Sea" and, though he was only a part of the story for a brief period, he turned out to be one of the most honorable characters in the series.

His hatred for the so-called "Island Devils" eventually subsides upon learning of Eren's plans, and he decides not to partake in the purging of Paradis Island's inhabitants in favor of attempting to save mankind from extinction. His story ends with him blowing up a Marleyan cruiser as a means of stopping the Yeagerists from pursuing his comrades.

2 Keith Shadis

Keith Shadis in Attack on Titan

If not for Keith Shadis, all life on Paradis Island would have been wiped out. The harsh yet encouraging nature he adopted during his training of the 104th cadets led to the creation of some of humanity's greatest fighters, thus giving humanity a chance to finally defeat its enemies.

Shadis chose to end his story in a blaze of glory by boarding a Marleyan ship and blowing it up, preventing the Yeagerists from pursuing his former pupils. He was an honorable man to the very end and one of the noblest characters in the series.

1 Erwin Smith

The most honorable character present in Attack on Titan is Erwin Smith, perhaps the bravest commander in the Survey Corps. His sole purpose is to protect and preserve the human race by any means necessary, even if it means sacrificing his men.

Erwin inspires his comrades to fight by his side, even if the odds are stacked against them. From losing his arm to the jaws of a titan to charging into the fatal firing range of the Beast Titan, he never stopped fighting for the sake of humanity. His story ended with him refusing to inherit the Colossal Titan in the hope of saving Armin's life.
