Over the last few decades, anime has grown increasingly popular in the West, to the point where a good handful of shows have well and truly hit the mainstream. While kid's anime is much easier to market in the West, with shows like Pokemon and Digimon having remained popular for over 20 years, adult anime tends to be a little more niche. That isn't really the case with Attack on Titan, which is one of the biggest anime shows in the West, spawning plenty of merch and video game adaptations such as the surprisingly great Attack on Titan 2.
Released in March 2018, Attack on Titan 2 is the direct follow-up to Koei Tecmo and Omega Force's previous entry, A.O.T: Wings of Freedom. Using the same fluid gameplay mechanics as its predecessor, Attack on Titan 2 improves on the loop in every conceivable way, introducing new weapons, mechanics, abilities, characters, and story sequences. In 2019, Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle released, being a large-scale expansion that added a slew of new content to the game. But that's the last Attack on Titan game to have been released, and it's about time for a sequel to come out.
It's The Perfect Time For an Attack on Titan 2 Sequel
The last two Attack on Titan games were surprisingly great. The core gameplay loop of Attack on Titan 2 and Final Battle captures the essence of the anime perfectly, with each mission tasking players with swinging around environments ripped straight from the show and slashing down hordes of Titans on the way to completing a specific objective such as escorting the rest of Levi Squad. Over the course of the game, players get access to new weapons from the anime, such as the Thunder Spear, and new characters get added to the playable roster like Mikasa, Erwin, and Reiner.
While those games were great, they didn't quite tie the series up in a definitive way, as neither the manga nor the anime had wrapped before the games were released. Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle takes players all the way up until the end of Season 3, where the story ends, and players are left to mop up the remaining Titans on Paradis Island. So, now that the Attack on Titan manga has wrapped up, and the anime is set to air its final episodes early next year, it's the perfect time for a new Attack on Titan game.
A potential Attack on Titan sequel game already has a great foundation to work from, with the previous games' gameplay being impressively fluid, frenetic, and responsive. That being said, there are a few key ways in which an Attack on Titan 2 sequel could improve upon its predecessor. A new Attack on Titan game could introduce some new weapons to the game, such as the firearms used by Marleyean soldiers. Some new scenarios would also be welcome, some of which could revolve around the use of airships. It would also be great to see the campaign not only cover the anime's events from the perspective of those on Paradis, but also those in Marley such as Gabi, Reiner, and the other Warrior candidates.
This would also lead to new types of Titan gameplay, which Attack on Titan 2 and Final Battle dabbled in but didn't emphasize too much. In those previous games, players could control Eren's Attack Titan, the Armored Titan, Beast, and Female, but each felt fairly similar to play as, with only one different attack animation separating each one. An Attack on Titan 2 sequel could refine Titan gameplay while also adding some new ones like the Cart Titan, Warhammer Titan, and Jaw Titan.
