Since its unveiling back in 2018, Atomic Heart has been a widely anticipated upcoming release for many, with Mundfish's surreal, sci-fi survival horror game seemingly taking inspiration from the likes of BioShock and Prey. Anyone who needed more convincing to keep their eye on the eerie game may have just got it too, with Mundfish releasing a new gameplay trailer announcing the title will be heading to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Talking to IGN about the decision, Mundfish was very open about what next-generation hardware could offer Atomic Heart, telling the publication that it "will have no loading screens due to [the] fast SSD." Alongside that, it seems the technical upgrade has opened some intriguing new doors for the experimental development team, who claimed: "Next-gen hardware also provides an exclusive opportunity to fulfill our artistic vision and deliver our game with stunning visuals with no downgrading."

As for the gameplay itself, it follows the protagonist of the game, P-3, encountering a mini-boss enemy known as Plyush. The footage begins with the player walking through the abandoned hallways of the game's research facility wielding a blunt melee weapon with what appears to be two cogs at the end, however, it's clear the gameplay has come a ways since Atomic Heart was last shown off. Not only is combat a lot smoother, but many of the game's locations feel more immersive and alive. After dispatching some particularly bloodthirsty bugs and a haywire robot, P-3 eventually comes face to face with Plyush, a horrifying monster made of grotesque tentacles that's much more agile than the player.

The pairs battle ends with Plyush gaining the upper hand, smothering his foe in blood-drenched tentacles. It's another engaging slice of Atomic Heart gameplay that shows off just how insane the title's shaping up to be, with its lineup of creepy monsters, violent robots, and twisted experiments all begging to be explored further.

Alongside the trailer and next-generation reveal, Mundfish also shared some more interesting details with IGN about Atomic Heart, including that Doom and Wolfenstein's Mick Gordon is working on the soundtrack. Mundfish also hinted more towards what the central narrative of the game will entail, stating "the game kicks off when robots start attacking people. P-3 will have to investigate what has caused all these events and deal with what (or who?) is behind all of this." Of course, it's not much to go on right now, but it definitely seems to hint that there will be some juicy mysteries in Atomic Heart when it releases some time in the near future.

Atomic Heart is in development for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
