While Assassin's Creed Origins might focus primarily on main character Bayek's journey through ancient Egypt, the game has also managed to sneak in some more of the modern day gameplay that the series has become famous for. In previous Assassin's Creed titles, modern day elements gave Ubisoft the flexibility to include a number of easter eggs they might otherwise have been unable to add, and Assassin's Creed Origins is no different—except this time, one of those easter eggs might have finally proven a long-standing fan theory.

Over the course of the modern day sections in Assassin's Creed Origins, players can access a laptop that is connected to the Abstergo network (Abstergo being the modern day version of the Templars). During these sessions, players can uncover security cam footage of Watch Dogs protagonist Aiden Pearce standing over the lifeless body of Olivier Garneau, the former Abstergo CEO who was himself a side mission target for Pearce over the course of Watch Dogs.

Fans have long believed that there is a connection between Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed, and the security cam footage is certainly a nod to that. Whether or not Ubisoft is hinting at a potential crossover between the two universes—something that fans have wanted for as long as both franchises have existed—or is simply acknowledging that they exist in the same space, it's an exciting addition that will no doubt create speculation for years to come.

Assassin's Creed Origins has some of the best modern day storytelling of the series, too, which could be an indication we are getting ever closer to the fabled time where Aiden Pearce and a modern day assassin begin to work together to bring down Abstergo. At the very least, Ubisoft has left the door open for a potential blockbuster announcement in the future, something that seems wise even if there aren't any plans to pursue it at this time.

Assassin's Creed Origins is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
