Throughout Assassin's Creed Valhalla, players will encounter many challenges across Europe. But while Eivor can face down different enemies and puzzles, there are some obstacles that can't be overcome in a straightforward manner. Since Assassin's Creed Valhalla's release, a number of technical issues have plagued players, including one irksome customization bug.

Partway in the Glowecestrescire region, Eivor will acquire a Mari Lwyd bone mask for a specific quest. Even after finishing it, however, the horse skull mask and cloak remain automatically equipped despite players trying to remove it normally. Thankfully, there is are several way to take off the bone mask as of the latest update to version 1.1.1.

Removing the Bone Mask

Players will first need to leave Glowecestrescire where the mask is automatically worn and head to Ravensthorpe. While the journey on horseback isn't a cross-country trip, most players should make use of fast travel via the map. After arriving in Ravensthorpe, call Eivor's horse, press down on the D-pad, and select the cloak option. After removing the cloak, repeat this same action once again and Eivor should put on a non-Bone Mask hood and cloak. Players can know if it worked because the feathers and pitch black color will be replaced by a more generic cloak and hood as seen in user Krusto RV's YouTube video below.

Photo Mode

While the first method will work for most players trying to remove their mask and cloaks, several individuals may still have issues afterwards. If that happens, photo mode is an alternate method to try out instead. Photo mode can be activated by pressing down on both joysticks for consoles or the F3 key on PC. Players can then exit photo mode by pressing circle, B, or Escape depending on their system and this should remove the mask.

Other Alternatives

Despite the most popular fixes, a few players will find that Eivor is still stuck wearing the bone mask and cloak afterwards. In those cases, the community has suggested more solutions such as upgrading the cloak at a blacksmith or even completing the entire Glowecestrescire storyline. The biggest factor to successfully taking the mask off seems to be altering the player's current equipment or satisfying the story arc where the mask and cloak originate from.

While there is still a chance Ubisoft provides a confirmed fix to this issue eventually, it isn't exactly gamebreaking and may not be prioritized despite players' hopes. Hopefully one of the above methods will work for players in the meantime before they resort to resetting to an earlier Assassin's Creed Valhalla save file.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
