As with all Assassin's Creed games, there are several unanswered questions by the end of Assassin's Creed Valhalla. These range from where the modern-day storyline will go next to how Eivor's adventures may influence others, as previous Assassin's Creed games influence Valhalla. However, within the context of the game itself, there is ONE big mystery that goes unanswered—one that can only be answered in Valhalla.

In the modern-day storyline, players are able to step into Eivor's shoes because Layla, Shaun, and Rebecca find her remains in Vinland. In terms of storyline, Eivor only travels to Vinland once and ends up influencing Assassin's Creed 3 with the Crystal Ball. However, it's clear she returns at some point and dies there, but there is a big question as to why. Basim will even note that not everybody gets a "choice," and that certainly means something with Eivor's pursuit of glory.

The Assassin's Creed Franchise and Death

Notably, the Assassin's Creed franchise and death have a unique relationship. Although the overarching story has always been about generations, and once more about the Isu bloodline, a majority of characters have no reason for death provided in lore. This includes Connor, Shay, Jacob, Evie, Arno, and Bayek, with Bayek being a standout as his body is related to the modern-day storyline. However, he is found in Egypt which gives no reason to pause; on the other hand, Eivor is found in a land she only visited once and has no real reason to return to.

Of course, the deaths of some characters are known, and this break typically has an interesting connection: they all advance or relate to the modern-day storyline. Altair's death in the library of Masyaf is all part of Ezio and Desmond's story but extends to Desmond and sets up Assassin's Creed 3. Ezio's death, in turn, is revealed through the Embers short film, which is also an origins story of sorts for Shao Jun.

There's no direct connection to the modern-day storyline for Ezio's death, but there is still a very slight connection. His death sets Shao Jun up to bring the Assassin presence back to China, which while explored little outside comics, has proven to be important to Abstergo in the modern-day lore. With many hoping, and rumors always suggesting a proper Assassin's Creed China game, is possible, it would make sense to retroactively add more weight to this death.

Either way, that's the weakest connection here. For Edward, his death got Haytham to America and thus involved in the events of Assassin's Creed 3, the first climax of sorts for Assassin's Creed's modern-day storyline. Without Haytham, there would be no Connor; with no Connor, Desmond could not have stopped the Catastrophe. Then, come Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Kassandra passes the Staff of Hermes to Layla who uses it to stop another in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Interestingly, with the exception of Ezio's death, Altair, Edward's, and even Kassandra's connect to AC3 in some way. The Staff got Layla to the Reader, who is clearly everyone's beloved Desmond post-AC3.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Eivor and Vinland

It seems that Assassin's Creed 3's events are making a return of sorts of importance, and since Eivor has already influenced AC3, choosing to return to Vinland some day and die there may just have a similar impact. Of course, that's impossible to know for sure, but the question as to why and when could have huge consequences for the modern-day storyline. Specifically, she is listed as being buried at Tsoka'wa'kowahne near the modern city of Concord.

It's unlikely that fans will know what's next until the next Assassin's Creed game releases in 2023 or later, but it seems that the answer to this question in this context isn't that far away. In fact, Siege of Paris sets a precedent that, if followed, will likely reveal why Eivor returns to Vinland one day.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Siege of Paris DLC and Time Skips

Vikings are not particularly well-known for having a long lifespan. While Eivor is no ordinary Viking, death will come for her too, and it stands to reason she will be another Assassin's Creed protagonist where her death is important. Eivor was born in 847, the main game ends around 878 AD, and so she is about 31 at this time. Siege of Paris takes place in 885, meaning that there Eivor will be about 7-8 years older (depending on when, specifically, it is set). If the Siege of Paris is advancing the game's presence in Eivor's time, it stands to reason that there could be similar advancements down the road.

More Assassin's Creed Valhalla DLC is on the way, with the Norse realm of Muspelheim being basically confirmed as an upcoming location. Muspelheim, in-game, corresponds with North Africa, a location that Vikings made it to as well. It's not the most "well-documented" aspect of their adventures, but there were raids and the like there. One notable raid happened in the late 850s/early 860s, meaning that is well before Siege of Paris. However, Eivor may or may not physically travel there at a later date, but it seems that her adventures are not done. Between Siege of Paris and the Muspelheim DLC, it stands to reason that more time will pass.

Eivor's adventures as a Viking fit in well with the "life exploration" of several Assassin's Creed protagonists, and assuming based on Ubisoft's confirmed DLC wording that more is coming alongside or after Muspelheim, it could be that a DLC will see Eivor return to Vinland and explore the events around her death. It is still up in the air, of course, as this is all speculation. But given Eivor's importance to AC3 and Vinland, the importance of death and the modern-day storyline, how the current modern story connects to the original, and the sheer world-spanning adventures of the Vikings, fans may know the answer to this mystery before everything Assassin's Creed Valhalla is said and done.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
