Assassin's Creed Valhalla is here, and the game is massive. Players are continually finding new secrets and surprises including Easter eggs, nods to other franchises, and crossovers. Recently, fans have found a Portal reference in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, two games that probably couldn't be any further from each other.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a highly-rated entry in the series, and one of the big games for Fall 2020. Taking place in 873 AD during the Viking Era, the setting is very different than the futuristic sci-fi setting of Portal. However, that didn't stop Ubisoft from referencing the classic first-person puzzle platformer in Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

A Reddit post that highlights the interesting find was recently posted in the r/gaming subreddit by user KylarStern327. In the image, it appears that Eivor (Assassin's Creed Valhalla's protagonist), tells an NPC "so the cake was a lie?" Details beyond that were not shared. The cake being a lie usually indicates that there was a false promise driving players to take on a task.

The reference is a popular meme from Portal that spread throughout the Internet after the release of the original game in 2007. With the game being quite old now, some users joked in the comments that the Portal "Cake was a Lie" reference is outdated, pointing to Ubisoft itself being a bit out of touch in its usage of the meme. That being said, the Portal games are classics, and the joke is as well.

There's no way for the Portal universe to connect with the Viking world of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, other than in the modern-day portions of the Assassin's Creed games. However, these types of Easter eggs are still fun, like the Sony love-letter in Ghost of Tsushima. In that one, the games were at least attached via the Sony brand. Ubisoft giving a friendly nod to Valve, two completely different publishers, is neat in its own right.

The Portal games are beloved and considered modern classics by many. Fans are still hoping for a Portal 3, which is why fan-made Portal games and mods have popped up online to fill the void. However, with Valve's propensity to rarely ever make a true third entry in a franchise (look at Left 4 Dead, Portal, or Team Fortress), it doesn't seem likely that Portal 3 will happen.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
