Assassin's Creed Valhalla will remove one of the most frustrating things about Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Ubisoft has confirmed. The Assassin's Creed Odyssey reviews were incredibly positive but some players had an issue with the way that the game was balanced.

Speaking to Press Start, Assassin's Creed Valhalla creative director Ashraf Ismail said that with the balancing of the game, the goal of the development team is to "just let players play the content they want." Players who want to enjoy the game's narrative will be able to, while those who want to enjoy the game's settlement building gameplay can put their time into that. Ismail said that "it’s really up to players to decide how they want to consume the content."

In Assassin's Creed Odyssey, one of the biggest criticisms was that players would often find themselves having to stop and grind before they could continue with the game's story. If their character hadn't leveled enough to be able to take on the next story mission, they may have to do hours of side quests first. Assassin's Creed Valhalla will have plenty of non-story activities and missions to do such as the Viking raids and assaults that players can wage against Saxon armies, but it sounds like this could all be optional.

This sort of gameplay may be optional but it's likely that many Assassin's Creed Valhalla players will find themselves taking part just so that they can learn more about the Vikings and the Saxons. Gameplay features such as the Viking rap battles, or flyting as it would have been called in Viking times, may seem silly on paper but were an important part of the culture. Without the grind, players can complete this activities and missions at their own pace, not being pressured to do them because of story mission balance.

Ubisoft has revealed a huge amount of information about the game since announcing Assassin's Creed Valhalla with a cinematic trailer yesterday. However, some fans will want to wait to know more before pre-ordering.

Positively for those fans, there will be an Assassin's Creed Valhalla gameplay reveal at next week's Xbox Series X gameplay event. It's unclear how of this player choice fans will get to see in the gameplay reveal but more about that will likely be shared before the game releases in holiday 2020.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla will release holiday 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC, as well as for PS5 and Xbox Series X when those consoles release.
