Assassin's Creed: Valhalla is shaping up to be yet another departure for the Assassin's Creed series. It many ways, the game seems to be striking a balance between the new wave of RPG mechanics and the classic Assassin's Creed gameplay, highlighted with moves like Assassin's Creed: Valhalla bringing back insta-kill Hidden Blades. However, Valhalla fans noticed one other big change with the game's first trailer.

Valhalla protagonist Eivor will wear the Hidden Blade on the top of their wrist, as opposed to stealthily tucked away underneath like in most Assassin's Creed games. The move was a bit confusing to some, but it appears that it was a very deliberate decision, according to Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's Narrative Director Darby McDevitt.

In a video recently uploaded to Twitter, McDevitt responded to a fan asking why the Hidden Blade had been changed. McDevitt gave an in-depth answer for the change, stating, "It's something Eivor feels very strongly about. When he or she gets ahold of this Hidden Blade, it occurs to Eivor that it would be much more interesting to let people see this weapon."

McDevitt goes on to explain that it was a normal thing in Viking culture to let people know that they had killed someone, and that people wouldn't be punished for murder if they had a "small justification," such as being insulted. That does, however, open up a pretty grim resolution for some of Valhalla's Viking rap battles.

Essentially, Eivor's Hidden Blade being more conspicuous is an honor move, which is a neat piece of characterization for the character. It certainly sets them apart from the other series protagonists, which may end up being refreshing as players journey throughout Assassin's Creed Valhalla's map.

It isn't entirely clear if this is something that will change depending on a player's playstyle. It seems that Valhalla will still allow for stealthy playthroughs, which contradicts the placement of the Hidden Blade. That being said, Valhalla also boasts deep character customization, so it's possible that players might be able to adjust the Hidden Blade, though that remains unconfirmed.

The Hidden Blade wasn't really featured in AC: Odyssey, at least not in a form that the player could use. That was disappointing to some, and its return has been one of the more anticipated aspects of Valhalla, even if it will function relatively the same as Odyssey's spear.

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla is currently in development.
