There’s hardly a chance one will be done with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla any time soon after starting their playthrough, but it has to end at one point. The trouble with playing a title as long as this one is that gamers get way too much into the groove of the game’s style and setting.

For this reason, it’s worth channeling that attitude towards titles that are either similar in quality or are completely the opposite. Some of the games on this list share a resemblance with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and are for those who want more of that experience. Others serve as a palate cleanser that should be your first stop to enter new worlds of gameplay.

Updated April 30, 2022 by Mark Sammut: Assassin's Creed Valhalla has had a far longer shelf life than most entries in the franchise, with Ubisoft even releasing quite a substantial expansion in March 2022. The Viking game does not deviate too far off the beaten path in terms of Ubisoft open-world games, and it comes absolutely stuffed with content that should keep players busy for a lengthy period of time. Once their time with Eivor is done, people can turn to these upcoming games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla (or not).

13 Elden Ring (2022)

Elden Ring Player Translates What the Bats Are Singing in Latin

FromSoftware’s Souls series might have had some influence on the Assassin’s Creed franchise starting from Origins, at least in relation to the combat. Dark Souls and Bloodborne are certainly solid recommendations for fans of Valhalla, particularly for those seeking a more streamlined setting; that said, Elden Ring is the best follow-up as it is FromSoftware’s first attempt at a full open-world, and the Lands Between is stuffed with epic boss fights, lore, and loot.

Valhalla and Elden Ring have quite different structures, with the latter opting to leave players to their own devices. With deep customization, great gameplay, and a sense of discovery that can match any other open-world game out there, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. It also provides a nice change of pace from Ubisoft’s standard formula, which might be welcome after dropping a hundred hours in Valhalla.

12 God Of War (2018)

Kratos a Spartan in God of War - 1 - Halo Spartan Program Facts

For many, there will be inevitable comparisons between this game and Valhalla. That’s justified, too, seeing as God of War did make the Nordic theme so popular a couple of years earlier. Regardless, completing Valhalla is bound to get gamers pumped for this title too.

It would make one feel empowered since God of War features a protagonist vastly more powerful and on his way to starting Ragnarok. There’s enough thematic similarity here to continue the mood from Valhalla, along with enough difference for it to come across as a refreshing experience.

11 Assassin's Creed 3 (2012)

Assassin's Creed III

Sure, Assassin’s Creed 3 doesn’t rank as high in the series as it could have, but it is a notable epoch for the franchise. This comes down to it being the end of Desmond’s story, which will be a very attractive prospect since Valhalla also brought back plot threads from this angle.

That sense of finality that Valhalla brings was earlier delivered in Assassin’s Creed 3. In addition, that epic scale of this title does hold up after all these years. Since fans will still be in the mindset of playing stories that finish things off, this game needs a definite playthrough.

10 Ghost Of Tsushima (2020)

Jin looking over the island of Tshushima in Ghost of Tsushima

Similar to Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima drops players in a unique era of history, one that has seldom been explored by the video game industry. Set during the 13th century, this open-world game follows a samurai, Jin, as he travels across the land taking on the invading Mongol army. The main story is satisfying, and there are also plenty of side quests for players to take on.

Ghost of Tsushima is a contender for the most beautiful open-world game of all time, giving Valhalla a run for its money. The combat system is also deep and enjoyable, offering players various options on how to approach scenarios.

9 The Last Of Us Part 2 (2020)

The Last of Us Part II

Although one is going to be drained by the long campaign of Valhalla, that fighting spirit is going to linger. To this end, The Last Of Us Part 2 is the best stop to satiate this feeling, being a game that thrives on the theme of revenge and honor.

Gameplay isn’t too far off from Valhalla, with exploration and crafting also featured prominently here. However, the brutality on display is certainly an acquired taste. Then again, players will be looking for something unique on its own and The Last Of Us Part 2 certainly is just that.

8 Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (2017)

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice

Interestingly, this title is both similar and completely different from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The setting is identical to its Nordic setting, but the gameplay is a world of its own. Hellblade takes the hack and slash approach, being a hard-hitting game that requires one to dive all in.

The creativity doesn’t stop there, with elements of psychological horror, puzzle-solving, and action-adventure blended together. It’s no doubt an unsettling venture for most, although one would come out a far better player than when they started.

7 Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

cyberpunk 2077 protagonist

The modern gaming landscape allows players to change things up around the same time, and Cyberpunk 2077 is joining Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as a game for the next generation’s launch window. To enjoy this one, players need to take everything they did in Valhalla and toss it out the window.

One look at Cyberpunk 2077 will tell you why, as the game is a futuristic first-person game that is deeply entrenched in the technological aspect of things. This involves extreme ballistics and hacking scenarios in an open-world, which is the ultimate palate cleanser after the period setting of Valhalla.

6 Horizon Zero Dawn (2017)

Aloy Giraffe robot

A marriage between a period setting and a technological one can be found here. While there are improvements that can be made for the sequel, Horizon Zero Dawn is otherwise a worthy journey into the futuristic dystopian savannah.

It doesn’t take the hardened style of storytelling that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla takes, although the attitude and appearance of the characters are somewhat familiar. Gameplay is a superb mix of melee and ranged combat which will feel like an upgrade for those coming in after finishing Valhalla.

5 Devil May Cry 5 (2019)

special edition performance xbox series x ps5

If you’re looking for an extreme level of change, Devil May Cry 5 is the only way to go. Ranked among the best entries in the series, DMC 5 takes an unabashed turn into the hack and slash genre, and surviving involves slashing one’s way to the end.

At its heart, this game's story carries a theme of family, entailing a heartwarming campaign. Not to mention the exceptionally stylish protagonists, all three of whom bring their own personalities and traits. Gameplay here will feel like the shackles have been broken considering Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s limited power level.

4 Rise Of The Tomb Raider (2015)

Lara Croft In A Tomb In Tomb Raider

There is more to see in this game than the costumes that Lara Croft rocks. This title is geared towards the tundra setting of the mountains and mellows down a bit on the previous entry’s hard-hitting style to bring a balanced focus on combat and puzzle-solving.

After playing the excessively long campaign of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the linear style of gameplay in Rise of the Tomb Raider will be very much welcome. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to explore, with the game featuring an open-world that is filled with danger and tombs to discover.

3 Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020)

Miles Morales

With this title improving upon the flaws of its predecessor, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set to bring in more superhero fun. It’s a well-deserved sidestep into this genre for games after the heavily thematic style of Valhalla. Miles Morales is simple entertainment that will deliver in droves.

It’s another launch title for the PS5 and should be the next game on your list if you’re done with Valhalla. Zipping around New York City with the Spider-Man powers will be like stepping into a completely new experience that is both fast-paced and filled with optimistic energy.

2 Valheim (2021)

valheim serpent in the sea

Want more Viking-themed fun? Then Valheim is the game to pick up. In early access, this title exploded onto the scene when it debuted in 2021, and it continues to improve with each passing month. Although also an open-world game, Valheim’s gameplay loop is wildly different from Valhalla’s since it prioritizes survival mechanics.

After spawning into a biome, players have to search the land for the necessary material to build weapons, armor, items, and bases. The ultimate goal is to kill the five bosses found in different biomes, but players will spend the majority of their time just existing within this universe.

1 Assassin's Creed (2007)

Assassins Creed 1

Had it not been for the first game, fans wouldn’t have made it a habit to speculate where future games would be set in history. Since Assassin’s Creed Valhalla marks another ending of sorts for the series, it’s worth revisiting how it all began.

Another major reason to go for this game is the fact that it follows directly after Valhalla in terms of in-universe chronology, as it is set around three centuries after the events of the former game. It’s also a great way in reflecting just how far the series has come.
