When the Assassin's Creed series first began in 2007, it instantly showed the potential of being one of the most unique and special franchises in gaming. Within just a few years, it became clear that the series had supplanted itself as one of the premier stealth action-adventures in gaming. However, even if Assassin's Creed is still very popular, many fans have become frustrated by how much the games have changed over the years, and with the announcement of a simple book, the Assassin's Creed faithful have come out in droves to troll the franchise once more.

Yesterday an Assassin's Creed "search and find" book was announced. Not to be confused with an Assassin's Creed book series or novel, this book is in some ways designed for children, albeit with gorgeous original illustrations. But there is a very obvious joke that the creators perhaps did not see coming, and the internet has pounced.

The Assassin's Creed: Where's The Assassin? (hardcover) is available for pre-order now. It appears to work like a Where's Waldo book (which was turned into one of the shortest video games of all time) in that players will search for an Assassin in a large illustrated crowd. The idea makes a lot of sense, as players are used to making their way through crowds in-game. However, because the games have moved away from stealth and have focused so much on action instead, the joke is being made that Assassins cannot be found in the real games either.

The Assassin's Creed games have changed drastically over the years, as the emphasis has moved towards role-playing elements, large open worlds, character customization, and more. But according to many fans, the series has also taken away its stealth elements and even its namesake, the Assassin. In fact, Assassin's Creed Odyssey took away the hidden blade, which is iconic to the series and the characters. So when a book is created that asks readers to find the Assassins, commentators are quick to remind everyone that the book may have them, but perhaps the games do not.

The Assassin's Creed franchise is in a bit of a tough place. While there are fans who would have loved to see the series stick to its roots, there are plenty of games that died off doing so. Even a game that is in the near exact genre like Thief did not survive. Perhaps it is better to evolve than to fade into oblivion. The Where's Waldo-style book itself is also very intriguing. The art looks impressive, the idea is very neat, and it will likely do well, as there are plenty of Assassin's Creed fans out there that will be more than happy to add this item to their collection, regardless of whether or not the games have Assassins in them.

Assassin's Creed: Where's The Assassin? will be released on September 7.
