Following the highly successful launch of Assassin's Creed Origins, after the franchise chose to end its game-per-year development cycle, an apparent leak from several Italian retailers seems to suggest where developer Ubisoft is directing the series next - namely, an HD remaster of Assassin's Creed Rogue.

Assassin's Creed Rogue was first released in November 2014 for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, and was the last Assassin's Creed title to be released on that generation of consoles. The title was notably overshadowed by the simultaneous release of Assassin's Creed Unity for the newer Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which arguably resulted in poor sales figures for the game.

While Unity was heavily criticized for its numerous graphical bugs and other problems, Rogue received relatively average reviews, and served as a more direct successor to Assassin's Creed 3 and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, making use of the sailing mechanics that appeared heavily in those titles.

assassin's creed rogue HD remaster leak

Twitter user AccessTheAnimus posted screenshots taken from several Italian websites that apparently show listings for an HD remaster of Assassin's Creed Rogue, along with a listed price of around €30 (roughly $35), and a release date of March 18th, 2018. Leaks from retailer websites are nothing unusual, though they do not always prove to be completely accurate, so this leak is best taken with a pinch of salt until Ubisoft issues an official confirmation.

The possibility of an HD remaster of Assassin's Creed Rogue being in the works is certainly credible. It would not be Ubisoft's first HD remaster; the developer released The Ezio Collection back in 2016, an HD title that included remastered versions of Assassin's Creed 2, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and Assassin's Creed Revelations.

Given the poor sales figures of Rogue's original 2014 release, it would not be surprising if Ubisoft wished to give the game a second chance without Unity's simultaneous release overshadowing it, and an HD re-release would be one way to do just that.

Whether the leaks prove to be true or not, the Assassin's Creed series seems to be back on track of late with the release of Assassin's Creed Origins, which saw a 100% increase over Syndicate's sales during its first 10 days.

The new title features the largest game world in any of the series' entries thus far and seems to have provided plenty of content to last players until the next entry in the series, which could be an HD remaster of Assassin's Creed Rogue as early as March of next year.
