Assassins Creed Revelations Trailer (Den Defense)

Who doesn't love a good tower defense game? Ubisoft knows the answer and has decided to include a tower defense inspired gameplay segment in Assassin's Creed: Revelations and is showing it off in a brand new trailer. While not billed as a tower defense mechanic (it's more of a tactical resource deployment mechanic) the objective remains the same. Use Assassin resources to hold off waves of incoming Templar warriors who are trying to invade your...den.

Ezio Auditore of Assassin's Creed: Revelations has been pretty busy in his third appearance in the series. He's learning how to craft bombs, appearing in Soul Calibur V, and, of course, continuing to stab Templar agents in the neck for the betterment of the world. Ezio will be continuing to add skills to his repertoire and assisting in the defense of Constantinople (not Istanbul).

Revelations will be building on the incredible amount of story and mythos created by the Assassin's Creed series in a few important ways. Ezio will be taking his exploits out to the Middle East, while real world hero Desmond is continuing to hone his Assassin skills to take the fight to the Templars in modern times. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Desmond will be able to utilize the den defense aspect of the game.

Take a look below for the fun Ezio is in for:

The Assassin's Creed series introduced recruitment and assassination missions for Brotherhood, so bringing in new game mechanics is a proven formula. There are sure to be plenty of fans who will be disappointed to see a so-called 'casual' type of game encroaching on their combat and traversal, but the success of tower defense games like Plants vs. Zombies can't be argued with. Hopefully, a majority of the modes will be optional, just in case.

Looks like Ubisoft will be trying to squeeze in a lot of new gameplay to keep players on their toes, which isn't a disadvantage at all. In fact, to see the inclusion of a tower defense game in a AAA title like Assassin's Creed is certainly a nod to the popularity of the game genre. Even if the mechanic looks simple, that could be seen as the hook. No need to bog down tower defense with excessive controls and options, and blowing up Templars with cannon fire is satisfying enough as is.
