As gamers are furiously trying to uncover the secrets of the Assassin’s Creed Revelations Facebook page, they are hoping that with each new teaser video comes a hint that this next game will be a whole new adventure. Unfortunately, according to a rumor based around this year’s E3, it appears Revelations might be nothing more than a continuation of the storyline of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.

Thankfully the rumor also claims that the next numbered entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise is also in the works, but, in order to make a 2011 deadline, Revelations needed to return to the time period of AC 2 and Brotherhood.

This Revelations rumor comes from the people at Xbox World 360 and makes specific reference to the reoccurrence of the date June 24, 1459 in the recent slew of teaser videos as the key to Revelations' setting. However, the videos feature a ton of references to items both from Assassin’s Creed’s past — including a background that looks suspiciously like Altair — and potential venues for the future of the series.

For now, it’s best to write this Revelations claim as purely a rumor. Though it might be financially more feasible for Ubisoft to put out another foray into the life and times of Ezio Auditore, gamers got more than their fill with the second game and Brotherhood.

With plenty of time to work on a third entry, or at the very least a new adventure, Ubisoft will be met with some mixed reviews if they unveil Revelations as a Brotherhood continuation. Sure, a wide variety of missions and the addition of multiplayer helped to make Brotherhood one of the best Assassin’s Creed titles yet, but it didn’t overshadow the fact gamers want a true continuation of the story.

Until such time as Ubisoft sees fit to shed some light on Revelations, it’s best not to do anything more than try to decode the teaser videos featured on the game’s Facebook page. Of course, being open to anything — whether it’s a fully-fledged Assassin’s Creed sequel or a retread of similar territory — will help prepare you for Ubisoft’s E3 presentation.

Would you be okay with once again visiting the world of Ezio in Assassin’s Creed Revelations? If Revelations is a Brotherhood sequel, where would you like to see the storyline go next?
