Assassin's Creed Ragnarok is the purported title of the 2020 entry in the franchise slated to release later this year, but even this title is mostly something fans have just taken to. Other titles, like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, have been tossed around, and many of the mechanics such as a choice between a male or female character (named Jora, so independent of each other unlike Alexios and Kassandra), co-op, and berserker mode are just rumors. The only thing that seems to be a shoe-in is that the game revolves around vikings.

As such, it's not a stretch to assume that the game will feature viking raids to some degree, and if it transcends the story, it could prove to be an interesting gameplay addition to Assassin's Creed Ragnarok. Imagining what that could look like, due to a keyword being raid, isn't actually that hard either.

Assassin's Creed Kingdom, Valhalla Leak

First, there's two bits of context that need to be addressed. While the official title remains in the air, many reports indicate that the code name for the game is Assassin's Creed Kingdom, which makes sense given the various factions that would be at play in a viking world. It too leans itself into the idea of raiding these various kingdoms, so the idea however unestablished isn't really a stretch.

At the same time, the Assassin's Creed Valhalla leak outlines achievements related to such an idea. It listed two achievements titled "William" and "True Varanigan," with the first for conquering a settlement and the second for completing 20 viking raids. There's a good chance this leak is fake, but it's worth highlighting that it's something that took place during this time. In other words, even a fake leak may realize that there's a good chance for a raid inclusion, thanks to the historical context of the time period. It wouldn't be Assassin's Creed's first foray into a similar mechanic, and it is purported by other rumors and leaks.

Assassin's Creed Ragnarok Viking Raids

Namely, an early leak suggested that co-op would return to Assassin's Creed Ragnarok, although it would be more akin to Ghost Recon Wildlands than Assassin's Creed Unity. Assuming co-op is true, there's a chance that viking raids could serve as massive battles that could be completed with multiple characters. Odyssey actually has something that would be mechanically similar, when players would choose to take place in huge battles between Greece and Sparta. Picturing that with a co-op function would make viking raids incredibly interesting to see, especially if it were drop-in/drop-out like Wildlands.

On the other hand, it's not likely to be related to a simple gameplay mechanic; this was a part of the world at the time, after all. Viking raids could take place in Assassin's Creed Ragnarok story with relative ease, especially more high profile ones like The Siege of Paris in 845. In fact, the raid of Lindisfarne in 793 AD is mentioned by Otso Berg, meaning that it could be reference or plot point in Assassin's Creed Ragnarok.

While the exact timeline of the game hasn't been yet determined, as the Viking era ran from roughly 793 to 1066 AD, there's a good chance its in the 800s. This would create breathing room as the first Assassin's Creed game takes place in the late 1100s, and it could beg questions for how the Templars and Hidden Ones/Assassins would operate in such close proximity from a presumably early form of the group prior to proper establishment. As such, there's plenty of early raids that could find themselves in the story as a gameplay mechanic, though as seen above, the Lindisfarne raid and Siege of Paris take place 52 years apart.

Animus shenanigans aside, it'll be interesting to see exactly when the game takes place, but the viking raids, should they exist, would make an interesting addition to Assassin's Creed Ragnarok.

Assassin's Creed 2020 is in development.
