Multiple industry insiders have pointed toward a proper Assassin's Creed Ragnarok reveal (or whatever the proper title for AC 2020 will be) in the coming weeks, and given Ubisoft's track record, that means leaks and rumors are rushing in. Indeed, since the likelihood of a reveal was mentioned, several "leaks" have happened. Perhaps the most believable and most recent comes from a YouTuber, who commented on Assassin's Creed Ragnarok's protagonist, weapons, and more.

The latest rumor basically refutes everything revealed up to this point by claiming that Assassin's Creed 2020 is another installment like Assassin's Creed Rogue. Players will take on the role of a Proto-templar wielding viking swords, and the game is allegedly titled Assassin's Creed: Origins II. It is said to explore the proper origin of the Templar Order, and the main symbol of the game and these proto-templars is the Valknut. Finally, there will be no hidden blades and all of this information comes way of a leaker who signs off as Baphomet.

Now, especially as games get closer to a proper reveal, rumors and leaks always live or die by their source. A close scrutiny of this "Baphomet" leaker suggests that this "leak" is entirely, completely, and utterly false. First, the provided title is Assassin's Creed: Origins 2, which aside from being a numbered sequel which Ubisoft has stepped away from, it also includes a colon. This is actually notable because Ubisoft has moved away from using such punctuation in most of its titles, and there hasn't been a colon in an Assassin's Creed title since Black Flag.

Secondly, those who pay close attention to Assassin's Creed Rogue know that it has teased this Norse setting for quite some time, but that correlation does not imply reliance one way or the other. Next, the proper origin of the Templar Order sounds nice and well, except for the fact that lore-wise, their "proper" origin wasn't until 1192. Baphomet says players will be a "Proto-Templar" which makes sense but would be narratively useless since these "proto-organizations" play a role in both Origins and Odyssey anyway, with the first being a much more direct "proto" version.

Lastly, the biggest giveaway is the leaker's chosen name, Baphomet. The deity appears in the AC universe in small lore bits already, and it is a "god" that the Templars supposedly worshipped during the crusades. It could be the leaker chose this name as a hint for something, but it's even more likely that this is just a wish list of return to form for Templars. As such, fans would do well to wait out the coming weeks and hope that a proper Assassin's Creed 2020 reveal is right around the corner.

Assassin's Creed 2020 is in development.
