Assassin’s Creed Origins was Ubisoft’s first attempt at reinventing the Assassin’s Creed series, with the new take on the franchise proving successful in both reviews and sales. Despite the release of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and the upcoming debut of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, one 63-year-old gamer is still putting a lot of hours into the Egypt-focused Assassin's Creed Origins.
Twitter user Lone Gamer posted a clip of her mother enjoying the game, with the player early in her second playthrough of Bayek’s lengthy journey. With her mother already completing the game once and even getting the platinum trophy for AC Origins, seeing the dedication to start another playthrough of the massive RPG is impressive. Perhaps Asssassin’s Creed Valhalla, which just went gold, will get her to try another AC game — though she certainly seems content with the one.
AC Valhalla will feature mechanics first introduced in Origins, such as more RPG-heavy gameplay like dialogue and segments focused on Assassin's Creed's modern-day protagonist Layla Hassan. It will be interesting to see if Lone Gamer’s mom takes to the Viking-focused game or remains with Origins, but regardless, seeing an older gamer in action is always fun. The 63-year old is clearly a huge fan considering that she reached 100% completion on her first playthrough, supposedly totaling over 200 hours.
With recent discussion around Assassin’s Creed Origins being mostly negative due to the decision to reduce secondary protagonist Aya’s role, it is nice to see someone appreciating the positive qualities of the game. With AC Origins introducing many of the elements that were improved upon in AC Odyssey and, hopefully, refined further in AC Valhalla, Origins remains an important and influential game for the Assassin’s Creed series.
With 200+ hours played and a second playthrough started up, Lone Gamer’s mother seems like someone who would not mind Assassin’s Creed never returning to its roots. Considering that the player supposedly had not touched a console game since playing Mario on the NES, AC Origins must have done something right to gain the attention of Lone Gamer’s mother.
The situation is very reminiscent of the beloved 88-year-old Animal Crossing player who sunk hundreds of hours into New Leaf. Both examples of older people playing games are entertaining and heartwarming, and it is nice to see Lone Gamer’s mom showing that there are gamers of all ages out there.
