With the slow churning out of triple-a games the past year or so, developers have turned to updating their previous titles with better performance on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. For the most part, this includes popular titles like Destiny 2, though plenty of other games have received enhancements. Now, a new game is entering the fold. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, originally released in 2018, will be updated for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Ubisoft announced the change on Twitter via the official Assassin’s Creed account. While the game won’t see any sweeping changes to visual fidelity or gameplay mechanics, Title Update 1.6.0 for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will make the game run in 60 FPS in backward compatibility mode for PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles. The update will clock in at about 370MB on Xbox and about 470MB on PlayStation, according to the announcement.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been criticized for being an Assassin’s Creed game only in name – something that Valhalla has also been accused of – though the game has maintained consistently high critical scores. Most of the praise has been directed towards Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s open world elements and overhauling of the franchise’s RPG elements. Some have gone so far as to point to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey as one of the best open-world games currently available.

Ubisoft has done a decent job of supporting its backlog of games on the newer hardware, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is far from the first game from the publisher to receive such an update. The Division 2’s update provided similar improvements to its frame rate on the hardware and boosted the resolution up to 4K. Assassin's Creed Odyssey uses dynamic resolution scaling, though it was able to run at 4K on the Xbox One X. Presumably, that will be the case here, too.

With Title Update 1.6.0, fans might have a reason to give Assassin’s Creed Odyssey another go. The game packs in a ton of content, and 60 FPS can make a considerable change to how the game feels to play. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla also just had its Siege of Paris DLC release, too, so there’s plenty for fans to chew through right now.

There are, of course, still lingering questions about the franchise’s future. Assassin’s Creed Infinity was recently confirmed, though there’s next to no information about what the game will be. It’s rumored to be a sort of evolving live service game, though it might be some time before fans find out for sure.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
