When Middle-earth: Shadow of War wowed gamers with its intuitive Nemesis recruitment system, gamers predicted that similar systems would begin popping up in other AAA titles too. It looks like the team behind Assassin's Creed Odyssey took notice of the positive fan reaction, as the upcoming Ubisoft title will allow players to recruit warriors in a similar manner.

Downed enemies can be recruited to the player's naval crew, becoming lieutenants and granting various bonuses. They'll also be able to appear on-land if players have the "Call to Arms" skill, making the metagame of recruitment an invaluable asset in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

With the system getting so many comparisons to Nemesis, fans could be forgiven for wondering if Ubisoft would also follow suit when it comes to unexpected celebrity cameos. For instance, Shadow of War made waves when comedian Kumail Nanjiani made a cameo appearance as a hilariously unconfident orc.

Since some of the recruitable enemies in Odyssey are premade as opposed to being randomly generated, it was worth checking to see if Assassin's Creed might recruit a celebrity of its own. When asked about if Odyssey could feature a Kumail Nanjiani-style cameo, creative director Jonathan Dumont said it's something gamers might expect to see in the post-launch phase of the game:

For now, no! But that doesn’t mean we won’t have some that could be added in post-launch.

While this means that Conan O'Brien probably won't pair up with Kumail again for a potential Clueless Gamer cover of Assassin's Creed, it strongly suggests that Ubisoft has at least given the subject some thought. Beyond that, Dumont mentioned 'some' celebrity appearances as opposed to 'a' celebrity appearance, a grammatical choice which is certainly food for thought.

Recruiting isn't the only new gameplay addition to Odyssey, which is poised to delve even deeper into traditional RPG territory with the introduction of dialogue choices. While Ubisoft promises that the all-new dialogue trees won't allow for players to miss out on any large portions of content, Dumont did say they will play a role in determining which ending players will arrive at.

Clearly, if fans want the best ending, someone like Kumail Nanjiani ought to be there to help them on the way, post-launch or not.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey will release on October 5, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
