VIdeo game movies are rarely good, and that includes the Assassin's Creed film. Released back in 2016, Assassin's Creed brought the best-selling franchise to the big screen for a film that did not compare to the video games. It introduced viewers to a brand-new protagonist named Callum Lynch who is forced to explore the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha. What ensues is a classic Assassin's Creed adventure, but it's devoid of all the fun and character that the video games are known for. The movie received mostly negative reviews from critics and fans alike.

Even with all the negativity surrounding the Assassin's Creed movie, the characters and time period present in it should be explored once more. The movie introduced a brand-new assassin to the Assassin's Creed lore and told a new story during the Spanish Inquisition. The assassin and time period have enormous story potential that the franchise should explore further. However, it should not be done in another movie, but instead Ubisoft should craft a game around these characters. It could help give the Assassin's Creed franchise a direction while also giving fans of the franchise a different period to explore, and it would make the film feel worth it.

The Assassin's Creed Movie Told a Brand-New Story

The Assassin's Creed movie introduced the modern-day Callum Lynch and the assassin Aguilar de Nerha. The story began with Callum watching his father kill his mother and get taken by Abstergo. Years later, Callum is on death row but Abstergo steps in and fakes his death. The company brings him to a research facility in Madrid, and he is recruited by the Templars to help them track down an Apple of Eden, the typical Assassin's Creed story. He is then introduced to the Animus and begins to observe the memories of his ancestor Aguilar during the Spanish Inquisition.

Aguilar is tasked with protecting Prince Ahmed de Granada from the Templars, but the prince is kidnapped by the Templar Grand Master. Aguilar and Maria, his partner, go off to save him. What ensues is a long mission to recover him and a quest to protect the Apple from those that wish to use it for vile purposes. Throughout all this, Callum begins to suffer from the bleeding effect which allows him to gain the abilities of his ancestor. He soon becomes an assassin of his own and escapes the clutches of Abstergo.

During Callum's journey, he meets many other descendants of great assassins. He joins forces with the descendant of the 16th-century Chinese Assassin Shao Jun and the descendant of the 18th-century Haitian Assassin Baptiste. Together, they combat the Templars and form a brotherhood of their own. The movie ends with them retrieving the Apple, killing the Templars, and vowing to protect the Apple from anyone who wishes to take it.

The story shared many similarities to other Assassin's Creed stories, but it was also very different. The movie completely changed the look and feel of the Animus, which was a controversial choice. It also introduced brand-new characters that are apparently canon to the Assassin's Creed video games. If so, then Aguilar and Callum played a pivotal role in the history of the world, and they need to be explored further. They protected one of the infamous Apples of Eden, and disrupted the Abstergo operations in the modern-day. However, the sequel was canceled due to poor performance and negative reviews. This means that one of the few ways fans of the franchise will ever be able to experience what comes next would be through a game, and Ubisoft should deliver.

An Assassin's Creed Movie Game Could Continue the Story

Assassin's Creed Movie Heroes

Assassin's Creed video games have hardly explored the Spanish Inquisition. Now that the movie has introduced a new assassin that lived during that time, there is little reason not to explore it. Fans of the franchise know that Aguilar de Nerha was combating Templars during this historical period, but no one knows just how his story ends. When the series left him, he had given the Apple of Eden to Christopher Columbus and finished his mission, but that is nowhere near the end of his story.

An Assassin's Creed game that follows Aguilar has so much story potential. Aguilar only plays a minor role in the film's plot, which leaves a lot of space for Ubisoft to craft a brand-new story of its own. It could recap the events of the film with more of a focus on Aguilar, or it could continue his tale and watch him rise to prominence during the 15th century. This would make the film feel worth the watch, and would make the world building in the film feel like it was not a waste.

Callum Could be the New Desmond

Assassin's Creed Movie Animus

The Assassin's Creed movie introduced the brand-new modern-day protagonist Callum Lynch. Ever since the death of Desmond Miles in Assassin's Creed 3, Ubisoft has struggled to make the modern day feel like a necessary aspect of the series. Assassin's Creed Origins saw the introduction of Layla Hassan as the replacement for Desmond Miles, but she never felt as interesting or integral as he did. At the end of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, she met her end and Basim rose in her place, which makes him the likely contender for the next protagonist. However, Callum Lynch could be a good fit to take over the modern-day story.

Callum Lynch was never fascinating in the movie, but the games could make him more interesting. He ended his journey in Assassin's Creed as a member of a modern-day Assassin Brotherhood. He has accepted his heritage and gained the abilities necessary to be an assassin. If he took over as the series protagonist then it would be the first modern-day character that begins as an assassin, and that could lead to a much more active modern-day setting where players actually embark on assassination missions. His story could be accompanied by a story following Aguilar, and could lead to a pretty fun series of games -- not to mention the fact Ubisoft could get Michael Fassbender to voice him.

No one is pretending that the Assassin's Creed movie was one of the greatest video game adaptations, but it did build out some interesting characters in the franchise. It introduced a brand-new assassin and modern-day protagonist that should be explored further through video games. This could lead to a whole new overarching story following Callum through the world of Assassin's Creed, but it is highly unlikely that Ubisoft is going to take the franchise in this direction.
