As part of Assassin's Creed Mirage's reveal in Ubisoft Forward, the company states that a "little bit of every Assassin's Creed game is in Mirage," with Game Rant speaking with creative director Stephane Boudon to get more details on this.

Assassin's Creed Mirage is taking the franchise back to its root, being an action-adventure game focused on the story of Basim's rise to master assassin. Players will be able to explore Baghdad and the Hidden Ones' stronghold of Alamut, with the core gameplay focusing on stealth, parkour, and assassinations. Assassin's Creed Mirage is a homage to the classic games, particularly AC1, but it also draws influence from the open-world RPGs.

Boudon referenced AC Mirage's setting following the walled cities of AC1, while also having to honor the future of the Hidden Ones/Assassins with Altair a few centuries after Mirage. But it's not just AC1. Boudon says fans can expect the most influential games, generally speaking, to be Assassin's Creed 1 and the entire Ezio trilogy. Meanwhile, the next-to-last mainline action-adventure game, Assassin's Creed Unity, also provided Mirage with "some ingredients and tools." AC Unity was built with parkour in mind, but Mirage looked at how to modernize these features and provide them with the best quality possible. Boudon also added that the crowds of Unity were another inspiration:

"In Assassin's Creed Mirage, you will see a big crowd. It's been a while since you've seen such a crowd."

Furthermore, a lot of Assassin's Creed Mirage's fighting mechanics are derived from Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, though to what extent and how it this still fits into the action-adventure genre remains to be seen.

The most interesting point of their influence comes from the lore, however. Assassin's Creed Mirage is set between Origins and Valhalla, but still incredibly close to the time period of AC1. Mirage takes place during the height of the Hidden Ones, on the precipice of them becoming the Brotherhood (though not quite yet), and this means Mirage has to acknowledge both this past and this future.

"We have to tell a bit more about Bayek and his legacy in our game, but obviously, we are also very close to Assassin's Creed 1 with Altair. Even if we are not in the holy land, we also draw some links to this future."

The Ubisoft Bordeaux team leading Assassin's Creed Mirage played a lot of the classic games to prepare for this title, but fans shouldn't expect a simple throwback to a 2007 game. No, in every way, Bordeaux sought to take what made the classic action-adventure games great and modernize them in a way for a proper 2023 title.

Assassin's Creed Mirage releases in 2023 for Luna, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
