[UPDATE: Mods have received information from the poster. The mods state that the received proof could be fake but would take a lot more time and effort than most fake leakers will put it. As such, while it should be taken with a grain of salt, the mods have decided not to dismiss the rumor outright based on the provided information. Original story follows.]

As it stands, the biggest question regarding Assassin’s Creed Infinity is what form it takes. Ubisoft described it as an evolving world with multiple settings, inspired by the successes of games like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto. Unfortunately, that doesn’t really paint a good picture of what this game is or how it’ll play.

Now, a Redditor by the name of Smooth-Earth2875 claims to have insider knowledge of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, acknowledging that the game is still in the early stages of conceptualization and development. The Redditor claims to work at Ubisoft and has reached out to the mod team to offer proof, though as a new account, Smooth-Earth2875 claims that Reddit has stopped him. As such, this should be taken with a healthy dose of salt, and when/if the mod team verifies Smooth-Earth’s information, this post will be updated.

According to Smooth-Earth, each Assassin’s Creed story in Infinity will be a small and linear experience in semi-open world settings, something the Redditor compares to Hitman games. Players will seemingly take on the role of multiple Assassins in this, with each storyline featuring multiple missions. There will be a new story that overarches the entire game, developed overtime at an additional cost. While Infinity leads its own story, Ubisoft’s new style of open-world Assassin’s Creed games will be continually developed alongside it.

Potentially the most interesting claim is that Ubisoft is planning to ‘remake and retell’ older Assassin’s Creed games within Infinity’s structure, though which games have yet to be determined. This likely means that each game won’t be a “proper remake,” but a recontextualized way to experience the lives and stories of classic assassins like Altair, Ezio, Connor, and so on.

Many replies to this post indicate one common thought: it sounds too good to be true. Many have also claimed to see similar speculation in the Assassin’s Creed community, which makes sense. Again, it could be that this leaker is fake and saying what fans want to hear, and it should be treated as such until the mods are able to verify the post one way or another. The mods have responded now in a comment, asking for the Redditor to reach out to them via Discord. No further updates have been made.

If nothing else, this “leak” sounds like something that would be appeasing to the Assassin’s Creed community. There are many fears of what a live-service AC game could take and what it means for traditional, assassin-like gameplay, but if there is even a kernel of truth to this post, it sounds like Infinity could be a proper stand-in. It could allow for traditional gameplay in a live-service structure, if this is indeed the path Ubi is taking, while the open-world games continue with the company's current approach.

Assassin’s Creed Infinity is in development.
