Ubisoft Not Afraid to Delay Assassins Creed

In early March, almost as if on cue, a massive info dump hit the Net boasting tons of previously announced details regarding the future of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise. The leaked info included talk of a new, current-gen only title called Assassin's Creed Unity as well as a last-gen title called Assassin's Creed Comet.

Shortly thereafter Ubisoft made it official: confirming Assassin's Creed Unity with a stunning trailer and a few sparse details. However, while Ubisoft was ready to say "you got us" with regards to Assassin's Creed Unity, they were not yet willing to say anything about Comet.

And now that E3 2014 has come and gone without so much as a peep about a last-gen Assassin's Creed game, many have begun to wonder whether the title exists at all. The good news is that it does, and Ubisoft should have more to say about it "soon."

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot broke the news in a recent investors call saying, "We said that we were going to give more info soon on that, and it will come soon." Unfortunately, he didn't say more than that.

Will Assassin's Creed Comet be a spin-off of Unity?

We know based on previous quotes from Ubisoft devs that there is a current-gen game in development and that the publisher expects to release that game alongside Unity in the fall, but at this point the clock is really ticking. Obviously, Ubisoft's primary focus is on AC Unity as that is the future of the franchise, but with tens of millions of fans waiting on a last-gen game it behooves Ubisoft to announce something sooner rather than later.

As far as when gamers might expect an announcement, if it doesn't come in the next week or so we might guess that Ubisoft will unveil the game at San Diego Comic-Con at the end of this month. If not then, perhaps GamesCom is the event Ubisoft has selected for their announcement. Both seem likely possibilities, but we thought E3 2014 would be the place, so who knows.

In fact, we know absolutely nothing about this game so it's hard to drum up any excitement - especially as Unity's glossy current-gen engine and intriguing time period loom overhead. Ubisoft has a tall order with Comet — if that is the game's title — and this long period of waiting has done them no favors.

Has your interest in this last-gen Assassin's Creed game changed as the months go on without an announcement? What do you hope to see from the game?
