While the series struggled for a bit there, the Assassin's Creed franchise has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, largely thanks to the success of Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey. Eschewing the strict annual release schedule that arguably led to the franchise's initial decline in popularity, Ubisoft's developers now have more time to work on each new Assassin's Creed installment, and fans similarly have more time to build their anticipation for the next game in the series. At the time of this writing, we know next to nothing about the next Assassin's Creed game, but a rumor making the rounds claims that it could be set in China.

This rumor stems from an interview Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot gave recently, where he said that he would be interested in seeing a main series Assassin's Creed game set in China. It seems some have misunderstood Guillemot's words, thinking that he outright confirmed a future Assassin's Creed set in China, but that's not the case.

While a main series Assassin's Creed game set in China hasn't been released, the franchise has actually visited China before. Some may recall the spinoff game Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, though that game wasn't all that well-received by fans or critics. Considering the mediocre reception to Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, it's understandable some may want to see a proper Assassin's Creed game in the same setting.

It's possible that the next Assassin's Creed is set in China, but the prevailing theory offers a much different setting for the next game in the long-running series. Rumors have pointed to the next Assassin's Creed being about vikings, and there has even been some art found in The Division 2 that appears to back up that claim.

At the time of this writing, it's impossible to say where exactly the next Assassin's Creed game will be set. It could be China, it could be set in the viking era, or maybe Ubisoft will finally give in to fan demand and deliver an Assassin's Creed game set in Japan. Whatever the case may be, we will likely learn more about the next Assassin's Creed game by the time E3 rolls around next year.

A new Assassin's Creed game is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
