The Assasin's Creed franchise is known for taking major points in history and making them playgrounds. Fans of the series have experienced a culmination of time periods over the past years. The French Revolution, The Revolutionary War, and the Italian Renaissance are just a few to name. These time periods have sparked unique worlds and characters that are perfect for the Assassin's Creed universe.

Ubisoft has taken a new approach to the series in recent years by taking a year off in between releases. It has also rebranded the game into a full action-adventure RPG. These changes have given new life to this 13-year-old franchise. Assassin's Creed Odyssey released in 2018, which makes 2020 the year of the assassin.  Players can expect to play a new assassin in the next installment, but where and when will the game take place? Here are 10 eras we hope to find the Assassins in when they come back in this franchise's next installment.

10 World War II

The latest period the franchise has gone is Assassin's Creed SyndicateThe game takes place in the Victorian Era, which is from 1837 to 1901. World War II would take the role of the latest time period for the franchise and would be a much different game. Here, modern technology would be more prevalent and the use of firearms would take a larger role.

We have gotten hints to the Assassin and Templar conflict during The Great War, so it only makes sense for those conflicts to take place in the second world war as well. That said, there are numerous other time periods the franchise could go that would fit the Assassin's Creed portfolio.

9 The Great War

The Great War was the first time the entire planet was under immense pressure. The conflict between countries and forces would make this timeline a perfect choice for an Assassin's Creed game. Furthermore, this time period has less advanced weaponry and still utilized melee weapons.

The Assassin's Creed franchise has already treaded in this time period a little with a mission in Assassin's Creed Syndicate. The mission follows the Frye twin's grandaughter and grand-niece, Lydia. Lydia interacts with a young Winston Churchill, which makes us crave for a full-fledged game featuring this time period. Ubisoft should definitely return to the story of Lydia in later games!

8 The American Civil War

You may have thought the Assassin's Creed franchise already gone here, but you're really thinking of The Revolutionary War. The American Civil War marks a time in history where the country was severely split. It also features major historical figures that could easily show up in an Assassin's Creed game. Abraham Lincoln would serve as an excellent guide or ally during the story.

Furthermore, the Civil War fits perfectly into the Assassin's Creed portfolio. Games were prevalent during the time, but melee combat was as well. Additionally, an African American assassin would make for a unique story. Ubisoft's main characters have not been the most diverse, but this time period would certainly help.

7 The Mexican-American War

Assassins Creed Leap of Faith

Between 1846 and 1848, the Mexican-American War took place. The war occurred because the United States wanted to achieve its "manifest destiny." The president at the time believe the country had a right to own all the land until the pacific ocean. Because of that belief, this war broke out between American and Mexican forces.

The famous Alamo battle was fought during this time. Ubisoft could tell an exceptional story of a Mexican assassin defending their homeland from foreign intruders. The Alamo could play a large part in the game's story. Moreover, the story would be very relevant in the United States today.

6 The Anglo-Zulu War

The Anglo-Zulu War started and ended in 1879. The war started when the British became interested in the Zululand. They primarily wanted the area because of labor needs and a plan to create a federation. The war is so significant because it had several bloody and brutal battles.

Both sides of the war won various-sized conflicts and encounters. In fact, the Zulu won the very first battle of the war. Unfortunately, the British ended up winning the conflict. Assassin's Creed Origins is the only game set in the African content, but it is set significantly earlier than 1879. The Anglo-Zulu war would make for a very interesting assassin story.

5 The British Raj

The British Raj takes place from 1858 to 1947. This time period is defined as when the Indian subcontinent is controlled by Britain. Trade with India was highly valued but had many literal obstacles. The routes to India were scattered with what is known as middlemen, who posed threats to the goods traveling through the routes.

Britain combated the obstacles with the East Indian Company, which began to expand when attacked. Indian history and culture is very unique and deserves to be recognized and explored. Ubisoft would certainly have a different kind of game on their hands if the explored this time period.

4 The Edo Period

The Edo Period is set between 1603 and 1868. It is also a prevalent time when the Samurai were unchallenged. The "no more wars" time kept the population up and the economy growing. An assassin that took the role of a Samurai would be excellent. Many fans have actually requested a Feudal Japan Assassin's Creed game, making this time period one of the fanbase's most requested.

Various Japanese families fought for control in Japan for many years. This kind of conflict would make the game a very compelling story. Additionally, the period-accurate equipment during this time would be very interesting to us in gameplay. Ubisoft would have a fun time developing gadgets and weapons for this time!

3 The Spanish Inquisition

Now, there is an Assassin's Creed medium that takes place during the Spanish Inquisition, but it was not received well. Specifically, the Assassin's Creed movie took place during this time. It is possible for Ubisoft to set another famous assassin during this period because it spans from 1478 to 1834.

The Spanish Inquisition was when the tribunal court system used by the Catholics targeted "heretics," which included a variety of other religions such as Judaism. The moral conflict of this period would be a great way to deepen the ideological clash of the Assassins and Templars.

2 The Mongol Empire

The Mongol Empire was the largest land-based empire in history. It lasted from 1206 to 1368 and influenced numerous civilizations. Ubisoft could do a lot with this empire and the time period it takes place in. The developers could even position the assassin in a civilization affected by the empire - the potential is limitless!

Regardless, the Mongol Empire is screaming for an Assassin's Creed game. The culture is rich and was well respected among the Mongols. This mixture of cultures would create unimaginable ideas for an Assassin's Creed game.  The story and world would most definitely be rich.

1 The Viking Age

The Viking Age was set from 800 to 1059. The age of the Vikings was full of sea travel and exploration. This year's Assassin's Creed game is rumored to have a Viking setting. Sea travel would most likely take a large role in this game, similar to Odyssey.

During the 800's, the Vikings expanded into Europe where they had resistance. Ubisoft's game will most likely take place during these times as it would set a perfect moment for conflict. No matter where the next game is set, the setting will certainly be a breath of fresh air in the Assassin's Creed timeline.
