This past week has seen a truly remarkable shift: the gaming world has gone from knowing absolutely nothing about the facts of Assassin’s Creed 3 to having a firm grasp on the setting, characters and new gameplay. Some fans have already speculated to the point of knowing exactly how the trilogy will come to an end, but in case anyone still wasn’t satisfied with that flood of information, Ubisoft is hinting at even more official details coming extremely soon.
That’s thanks to a mysterious countdown found on the official site for Assassin’s Creed 3, placed atop a snowy American field which already promises more intrigue and atmosphere than the opening mission of Revelations. The countdown states that on Monday, March 5 at approximately 12:00 EST something will be revealed, although at this point it’s hard to imagine the publisher doing anything but confirming what is already known.
It’s hard to think that the veil of mystery surrounding the third installment of the Assassin’s Creed saga was lifted as Ubisoft had hoped, even if they, too, joined in the rush of released information by then end. First came revealed artwork sporting an American hero, then the stunning box art of the game was leaked, and finally, gameplay details confirmed that not only would the new assassin Connor be half-Native American, but that players would most definitely be fighting in the American War of Independence. Regardless of how Ubisoft intended to break the news, the amount of discussion and excitement that has resulted can’t be regretted.
Still, it’s hard to know if the countdown’s end will bring any truly staggering information. Even a trailer at this point isn’t incredibly likely, with the game not being released until October. Obviously a trailer would send discussion and fan excitement sky-high, so a cinematic trailer introducing the new hero or snowswept America seems the most likely. Some might recommend steering clear of any spoilers now that the basic premise is known, but if Assassin’s Creed 3 is the biggest adventure yet, then even the spoiler-weary are safe at this point.
If nothing else, a trailer or extended description of the game’s plot will explain how the game world itself will be divided. We’ve seen screenshots of the forest and colonial cities, but if Connor (a.k.a. Ratohnhake:ton) is Native American as is assumed, then how will that aspect of American life be explored? Either way, there’s a good chance that what fans are most excited to witness is the ways in which Connor will be wielding that tomahawk in battle.
We’ll keep you informed when the site’s countdown ends, and if all the details released so far can be deemed ‘official.’ Are there any specific areas of the game that you hope to see explained? Desmond’s role in this chapter, perhaps?
Assassin’s Creed 3 will be released on October 30, 2012 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
