Assassin's Creed 3 Sneaks into October 30th 2012 Release Date

Shortly after learning that Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is set to receive more single player content, in the form of a yet-to-be announced Desmond Miles DLC offering, we’re now getting word that the inevitable franchise follow-up, Assassin’s Creed 3 has been given an official release date.

Get ready to re-enter the Animus for an all new Assassin’s Creed adventure this Fall – specifically October 30, 2012.

Details remain extremely scarce about what we can expect from the upcoming title but Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, officially dropped the release date for the next installment in the third-person historical action franchise (which will make it’s purposed end of the world launch window) while speaking on an investors call.

To quell concerns that Ubisoft was merely churning out another “expansion” (a criticism levied at the last two installments), Guillemot confirmed that the studio has been hard at work on the title for three years already – with (presumably) another six months to go: “We will push the title a lot because it’s a fantastic product that the team has been working for three years. What we have seen is just fabulous.

As a result of the “fabulous” results, the studio head also promised that the title would represent “the biggest launch in Ubisoft history.

Guillemot didn’t elaborate on what players might expect from the actual game – though we do know that Assassin’s Creed 3 is going to present an all new chapter in the series, with an all new assassin protagonist. The most recent speculation suggests that gamers will jump into the boots of an assassin operating during the American Revolution. That said, until something official is announced (possibly in April 2012), any potential insight into the next installment is mostly just hearsay and conjecture. Remember, similar “reports,” coupled with the recent Assassin’s Creed Embers animated film and an Ubisoft user survey, had indicated that Assassin’s Creed 3 could actually be set in China.

Assassins Creed Embers Ezio Shao Jun

While the gameplay possibilities in an American Revolution setting are definitely intriguing, it’s somewhat difficult to imagine a locale that is so far removed (at this point), both in terms of geography and time, from the events in Italy (and, subsequently, franchise protagonist Ezio). We know Ezio won’t be back for the next installment but, given the deep and complicated storyline running through the series (not to mention sheer amount of time spent with the character), his legacy will have to be of seismic importance to whatever comes next.

The release date announcement wasn’t an impromptu slip-up and is likely the beginning of a larger marketing strategy – meaning that, with the release slated for only nine months away, we should be hearing some concrete details in the not-too-distant future. In the mean time, check out our feature regarding what we want to see in Assassin’s Creed 3.

Assassin’s Creed 3 will release October 30th 2012 for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and (possibly) Wii U.
