PC Gamers out there know that when it comes to games ported to their platform of choice controllers are usually (but not always) the way to go. They perfectly mimic the console experience, only with the added boost of some better graphics.

Typically developers, when porting or developing their title for the PC, will look at the mouse/keyboard set up first, and then consider what the game would be like with a gamepad. However that will not be the case with Assassin's Creed III.

According to Creative Director Alex Hutchinson, the team at Ubisoft is looking at the controller as the main peripheral for experiencing Assassin's Creed III, and won't be "investing hugely in a mouse and keyboard setup." That isn't to say that the mouse and keyboard won't be supported, it will just be the second best option.

When the news first broke regarding Ubisoft's preference for the controller it was presumed that the PC wasn't getting the full attention it deserved, but Ubisoft quickly dispelled those rumors. This is one of the most highly anticipated game's of the year, with literally every piece of marketing showing something new and exciting, so it would be foolish of Ubisoft not to include every segment of the gaming public (even future Wii U owners) in on the action.

“We’re definitely supporting PC. We love PC, but I think it’ll be PC with a controller. I don’t see us investing hugely in a mouse and keyboard setup. I think if you want to play on PC and you want to play Assassin’s Creed, you have a controller.”

It's not unheard of for a PC title to more closely mimic its console brethren, especially if it’s a multi-platform title known for having its greatest success on the PS3 or Xbox 360, so it's fair to assume plenty of gamers out there have a decent controller for their PC.

In fact, if Microsoft and Sony fail to unveil anything about their forthcoming consoles in the next 12 months, we might see a changing of the guard — where the PC becomes the preferred platform only with the added boost of a gamepad. Ubisoft might be ahead of the trend here.

How do you feel about Ubisoft putting the controller ahead of the mouse and keyboard for Assassin's Creed III? What console are you planning to play the game on?

Assassin's Creed III releases October 30, 2012 for the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360.
