As the DLC and support for Assassin's Creed Odyssey dies down, many are now casting their eye to the next entry in the long-running franchise: Assassin's Creed 2020. Odyssey and Origins have not only shaped expectations for future games, but they've pulled the series out of several years of franchise fatigue. It would be a massive upset to see a regression now, and one way Ubisoft can avoid that pit trap is by continuing to improve upon its formula.

There's no doubt that Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a great AC game, but it's much more: a great game, period, and one of the best RPGs of 2018. Odyssey doubled down on Origins' RPG elements, and for the next game to go even further, it must once again double down on these elements. Specifically, Assassin's Creed 2020 should do better in terms of player choice, allowing them to better shape their own story and even find love where they desire.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the first AC game to have multiple endings and romance options. For what they were, it was a great addition to the game, and one that helped cement its RPG options. However, the multiple endings is effectively just one ending, with a varying degree of people sitting at the table. Some lived, and some died based on player choice, but regardless, players still ended up at the table.

On the romance front, it also varied significantly. Some romance quests were huge and involved, whereas others were basic quests. Some were even just gags for the most part. Assassin's Creed Odyssey got Ancient Greek sexuality right, but it seems to have dropped the ball on any meaningful relationship. After all, when players get romantically involved in the later DLC, a lot of players thought this felt forced and violated the Alexios/Kassandra they had created.

Including similar systems, while also improving upon the formula, would go a long way in keeping the momentum behind the Assassin's Creed franchise moving forward. Instead of a simple ending with a varying number of people, Assassin's Creed 2020 could create more varied endings themselves. Perhaps players who chose a more aggressive playstyle could find themselves fleeing the brotherhood, perhaps players who followed the Creed more carefully could go on to become Masters like Ezio, or those who were more passive could even fail. While it doesn't have to be an extensive change, it would go a long way in justifying player choice in the long run, not just the short one.

For romance options, Odyssey would do well to take note from various video games that do romance right, such as BioWare classics like Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Instead of a ton of romance options that were more physical than emotional, focusing it down to a handful that have some influence or impact on the story would be great. It doesn't have to create a full companion system, which wouldn't feel fitting, but knowing that someone is waiting on the Assassin/Viking's return would be a major step up.

Overall, as long as the Assassin's Creed franchise continues to move forward, it should be a step in the right direction. Improvement and innovation on established formulas, letting go of the past, and learning from its community will make Assassin's Creed 2020 all the better for it.
