The popular manga Assassination Classroom may be popular amongst school kids in Japan, but it’s facing controversy in America. The manga has already been banned by two schools, one in Florida and another in Wisconsin, and that may be only the beginning. It’s not the first manga to be banned from public school in America, and is unlikely to be the last.

The news about the ban was even posted on American news outlets like USA Today. The first school to remove Assassination Classroom from its online library was Elmbrook School District in Wisconsin, and now Gilford Middle School in Florida has followed suit last month. Both were removed after complaints from parents or teachers about the manga’s content.

Assassination Classroom follows a class of misfits and drop-outs who seem to have little hope for success in their lives. Then a new octopus-like creature named Koro-Sensei showed up, and became the best teacher they have ever had, helping them with academic skills and also assassination skills! But it turns out that Koro-Sensei is also going to destroy the world, so the class has been tasked with assassinating him first. Too bad conventional weapons don’t work on him, so they have to work together to try to find his weakness before it’s too late. The manga were first banned at Gilford Middle School due to images of the students holding guns and trying to shoot the teacher. With the string of recent school shootings in America, it is fair to want to remove those kinds of images from the school. The teachers stated that they do not want the students to think it was okay to kill their teachers, even in a story, and parents agreed. In Florida, the Citizens Defending Freedom organization disputed the manga both over the violent images and what they consider to be sexually explicit content, especially with characters who are minors. Koro Sensei of Assassination Classroom There is also a bill active in Florida that requires all school libraries to have only material that has been approved by a holder of an educational media specialist certificate given by the Florida Board of Education. This bill is being cited in regard to Assassination Classroom’s content. The series has also been challenged by school boards in North Carolina and Virginia. In the case of Virginia, Assassination Classroom was even cited as part of a bill proposal to force schools to keep a catalog of all of their media that may be sexually explicit to share with parents. This bill, however, did not pass the Senate - but Assassination Classroom was directly quoted as being an example of the problem. With America’s current climate regarding gun violence in school, it’s no surprise that manga featuring gun-toting students trying to shoot their teacher has become a point of contention. However, there are always two sides to every story. Death Note faced the same kinds of companies in the last twenty years, but was also named one of the Top Ten Graphic Novels for Teens and used to raise awareness against banned books. But Assassination Classroom’s future remains in question in public school in America, and likely will until the violence in schools there stops.
