"The Abandoned Child Of The Cathedral And Making Colors"

Ascendance of a Bookworm Wilma holding Dirk in her hands

At the beginning of the episode, a group of nobles meet with the high priest and discuss their failed attempt to capture Myne during the Spring Prayer. These conspirators include Viscount Gerlach, Schicicoza's mother, and a foreign noble named Count Bindewald. Bindewald in particular makes it known that he wishes to purchase Myne to the high priest Bezewanst. In return, Bindewald offers the high priest payment in the form of a mysterious item. In the meantime, Myne is still over the moon about the birth of her baby brother Kamil. While talking with Benno about Corinna and Otto's new daughter Renate, Myne tells Benno that she is temporarily barred from printing books, for the time being, explaining Ferdinand's worries. Benno agrees with the head priest's caution, and the two decide to focus on making picture books instead, with Myne wishing to find a method of making colored ink.

Later, while Myne is speaking with her attendants about Kamil, Wilma brings in an abandoned baby. Ferdinand suggests finding a wet nurse, especially since no one is able to provide milk, but since one cannot be hired immediately, Myne and her attendants decide to take turns watching over the baby. Myne specifically encourages Delia to do so, hoping that it will distract her from her original goal of becoming a noble's concubine. Myne decides to name the child Dirk so that it is similar to Delia's name, and Delia quickly becomes attached to the baby.

Myne and Benno then meet with the new master of the Ink Guild, Bierce. However, Bierce feels that he is incapable of filling the role and hopes that Benno will take the role instead. Benno refuses, since the job itself would be incredibly bothersome, but Bierce has few other options. Myne offers her help in return for the Ink Guild's cooperation in creating colored inks. Bierce's daughter Heidi jumps at the offer, as she and her husband Josef, who had previously created the ink for Myne's books, were also trying to create colored ink on their own. Myne, Lutz, and her retainers head to Heidi's workshop, where they blend a variety of ingredients in order to come up with different colors. While they are successful in creating colored ink, the methodology for what ingredients make what colors remains unknown to them.

While leaving, Gil reminds Myne about the writing board she'd promised to buy him, and she suggests having Johann make a stylus for him as well. Meanwhile, Delia reports the birth of Myne's baby brother and the new arrival at the orphanage to the high priest, but he is unimpressed by the information she has. Delia dejectedly returns to taking care of Dirk when she discovers that he has a high fever and strange marks on his face.

An Antagonistic Force Revealed

Ascendance of a Bookworm Count Bindewald speaking with the conspirators

While it is merely a small scene in the opening, the meeting between the conspirators gives us a lot of information on who exactly has been targeting Myne. Their motives also come to light; Schicicoza's mother wants revenge against Myne for perceived injustices, while Viscount Gerlach seems more motivated by business and his friendship with the high priest. Count Bindewald is clearly the most dangerous, as he clearly possesses great wealth and desires Myne's power in order to create more Devouring soldiers like the ones that attacked the carriage. While their plans have yet to be fully revealed, it is clear that their intentions are malevolent.

In the meanwhile, the addition of Dirk provides a lot of joy, but also a lot of work for Myne and her attendants. Delia is clearly attached to Dirk, and while Myne hopes that this will deter her from trying to curry favor with nobles, it hasn't stopped her from providing information to the high priest. While she has caused any problems yet, there's no telling what could happen down the line. Dirk may cause Delia to have a change of heart later, but there's no telling if it will happen.

Finally, Myne's bookmaking aspirations continue in the form of picture books. Colored ink will allow Myne to create more vivid picture books, and while their attempts to create colored ink left them with more questions than answers, at the very least they were successful in their endeavors. While making books might not be what fans want to focus on right now, it's good to see Myne keep working towards her dream of making books for the masses.
