Actress Arden Cho has, for the first time, publicly addressed why she will not be returning as Kira Yukimura for the upcoming Paramount Plus Teen Wolf film.

First reported by Deadline back in February, Cho declined to return for the Teen Wolf movie due to having been offered half the per-episode salary of the three fellow actresses. Cho was the only woman of color out of the show's four regular female cast members and was a love interest for one of the male leads, Scott McCall (Tyler Posey).

Cho, who played Kira from 2014 to 2016 before being abruptly dropped during the hiatus between seasons five and six, has now confirmed that she was offered significantly less pay than her fellow cast members. “I think I was actually offered even less,” Cho said when asked about her salary during an interview with The Cut. “I probably would’ve never shared it." Cho went on to share that this experience as an Asian American actress is not a unique situation.

Many other professionals in Hollywood have stepped forward in recent years to share their struggles with pay inequality in the workforce, whether it be acting, producing, or working on a set. “I could probably, off the top of my head, think of over ten Asian American actors I know who were paid significantly less than their counterparts,” Cho said in her interview. "Sometimes you don’t have a choice to say ‘no.’ Sometimes you just need it. You’ve got bills to pay. I wasn’t saying ‘no’ necessarily for me or because I was angry. I was saying ‘no’ because I hope that there will be more equality in the future."

Cho became a regular Teen Wolf cast member during season four. After receiving the call that she would not return as Kira for season six, Cho says she "was in shock. [she] couldn’t believe it." She continued on to say that "there wasn't room for Kira." Following her departure, the show found room for Theo Raeken (Cody Christian), Liam Dunbar (Dylan Sprayberry), and Jordan Parrish (Ryan Kelley), three white male characters who were introduced at the same time or after Kira.

After finding out that she would not be returning to the show, Cho went to YouTube to share the news with her fans. “Sometimes in a show where there are so many characters, there isn’t always room for everyone and everyone’s story lines, so I guess that was it,” she said in the video. "I do wish we could have developed a little more."

Aside from Cho's missing appearance, fans of the Teen Wolf series were also informed that actor Dylan O'Brien, who played Stiles Stilinski, is also not returning. While O'Brien has not confirmed why he is not returning, fans noticed that he liked a tweet regarding Cho's salary. "Dylan O’Brien having Arden Cho’s back we love to see it they deserve the world," one fan tweeted.

The Teen Wolf movie will be released on Paramount Plus.
