Director James Wan revealed the official title of the upcoming Aquaman 2 film in a social media post on Thursday. In a close-up shot of a screen, with a caption that reads “The tide is rising,” Wan revealed that the film will be called Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The image seems to be taken at a production meeting for Aquaman 2 since another photo shows a masked Wan sitting at a table with a name tag placed nearby. This goes to show that the film is finally picking up steam after having to wait a long time to even go into production due to Warner Bros.' busy schedule. Similar to other big DC projects, the plot of the much-awaited sequel has been kept a secret so far, but the official title does hint at the tales of Aquaman and Atlantis.

DC fans have been waiting for the big reveal for a while now, considering the movie is releasing next year. So as soon as the announcement of the Aquaman 2 title was made, Wan started to trend on Twitter. Fans of the franchise started sharing their excitement on the social media platform, with many appreciating how the director had casually revealed the title instead of making a big fuss over it.

The film will see Jason Momoa return to reprise his role as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, with Amber Heard also expected to return as Mera. This is one aspect that some fans raised concern over. Many referred to Heard’s controversial case involving Johnny Depp, with the former couple battling over their split very publicly. Both actors have alleged abuse against each other in the past, which even led to rumors that Heard had been fired from her Aquaman 2 role, especially since Depp had been asked by Warner Bros. to step down from the role as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. However, it was later confirmed that Heard will in fact be returning for Aquaman 2, which left some fans unhappy.

The first Aquaman released in 2018 and went on to become one of the highest-grossing DCEU films, earning more than $1 billion at the box office. It became the only DC film to reach that figure, apart from two entries in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, and was highly appreciated by fans for its witty dialogues and plot. Considering its success, fans expected a sequel to be released, and despite having to wait a long time, director Wan promised that it would eventually release in theaters.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 16, 2022.
