A Respawn Entertainment listing recently revealed something interesting for Apex Legends fans. It would seem that a single-player Apex Legends game is in development, with the listing specifying the Apex Universe. This terminology has not really been used at large before, and many fans were quick to catch on to this.

Many hope that it means a new Titanfall game is in the works, although this is incredibly unlikely, while the pendulum also quickly swept the other way. Some Titanfall fans were upset that it didn’t say Titanfall universe. This is important because, back when Apex Legends leaked ahead of its surprise launch, it was coined as a battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe. This doesn’t backtrack that, but it does change it significantly.

The New Apex Universe

Apex Legends and Titanfall share a universe—they always have and always will. It’s sometimes more subtle and sometimes more blatant. Apex Legends takes place 30 years after Titanfall, includes the Apex Predators from the latter, shares several weapons, and some legends, like Valkyrie, have backgrounds defined by Titanfall lore. Apex Legends was conceived as a battle royale title set in Titanfall’s Universe, and while those two markers will always be shared, Apex Legends is a huge success for Respawn and EA.

To change the terminology based on that idea is not surprising; it doesn’t nullify the Titanfall universe either. It’s just using the more prevalent term. As much as fans dislike it, Titanfall 3 doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to happen. Titanfall will always be part of Respawn, but Titanfall’s future is as murky as they come in the game world. Meanwhile, Apex Legends is reportedly getting a single-player game likely more tied to these events than Titanfall, and Apex Legends Mobile is entering season 2.

That’s not even discussing all the possibilities with the base game, and perhaps other projects that Respawn and EA are invested in. Titanfall fans being upset by this change is understandable, but it is not malicious. It’s just the right plan for the universe’s future. If Apex Legends continues to do well and that universe grows as it has, that’s the best bet for Titanfall’s future. It has changed, of course, but the DNA is still there.

Apex Legends is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
