Apex Legends just celebrated its two-year anniversary, and since the moment the game launched, Apex Legends has been one of the best battle royale games on the market. However, it seems as if Respawn Entertainment is toying around with the idea of expanding on the game in interesting new ways, which may include outside of the battle royale genre.

Season 8 of Apex Legends just kicked off a few days ago, so quite a few devs at Respawn took to Reddit for an Ask Me Anything in which fans could get some questions answered about the update, the state of the game, the future, and more. One of the very interesting and eye-opening answers had to do with the idea that Apex Legends could stretch itself beyond being a battle royale, and it looks like the team at Respawn is working on just that.

Recently Apex Legends tweeted out the idea that the game would launch new ways to play, perhaps beyond battle royale. So within the recent Reddit AMA, Respawn Entertainment Game Designer of Modes and Events Brian Vidovic tackles questions about this. Vidovic says that the team is always looking to expand the play space for Apex Legends. He notes that specifically the Legends themselves are well equipped for fun even outside of a battle royale experience. Vidovic says that really cool prototypes are in the works.

This would not be the first time that non-battle royale modes have found their way into Apex Legends. Limited-time modes have been used in Respawn's battle royale to spice up the experience. Specifically, the Winter Express mode in Apex Legends has become a yearly winter tradition. The game sees teams holding down control points on a moving train, and players select pre-determined gun loadouts. There is no storm that closes in, no looting. The mode is very much not a battle royale. It would be interesting to see if Respawn continued to experiment with these sorts of ideas, as fans have come to enjoy Winter Express.

Limited-time modes are fun, but with Apex Legends recently hitting some concurrent player records as well, it could be time to implement a permanent team deathmatch or objective-based and non-battle royale mode. With the battle royale maps also constantly being altered, many fans would appreciate TDM maps that are based on areas that are no longer playable. The community would likely be in favor of a team deathmatch in Skulltown, for example.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and will release for the Switch on March 9.
