Despite the popularity of Apex Legends, fans of  Respawn Entertainment are always interested in news regarding the Titanfall franchise. While Titanfall was set aside as Respawn shifted focus to Apex Legends, watchful players have kept an eye out for any hint of further Titanfall content. In Respawn's latest Apex Legends update, that first hint may have been dropped. A teaser for what's believed to be Apex Legends Season 5 refers to a Titanfall organization named ARES, which stands for Archaeological Research Division.

This past week Apex Legends dataminer Shrugtal discovered that several teasers were planned to be rolled out. The first teaser dropped this past Thursday and Apex Legends players scoured the World's Edge map for it. It turned out to be in the Dome area and it was just a small collectible data device. The device is sitting at a desk with the ARES logo on it and the words "ACCESS GRANTED." Players can then activate the device to receive a mysterious message.

ARES plays a key role in Titanfall 2. Stationed on the world of Typhon, General Marder of ARES seeks to us the Fold Weapon to win the war against the Frontier Militia. The protagonist of Titanfall 2 puts an end to that and the Fold Weapon was destroyed. However, General Marder escapes and is hinted to be at work with ARES again in Apex Legends.

While the new teaser definitely implies that ARES  is at work again in Apex Legends, it's not necessarily meant to imply a direct connection to Titanfall 2. Apex Legends takes place in the Titanfall universe, but so far the two games' stories have nothing to do with each other. Though to be fair, Apex Legends doesn't have much in terms of a main story thread.

That doesn't mean that Season 5 of Apex Legends won't take a step in the direction of tying the game closer to Titanfall, of course. It's clearly something that the fanbase wants badly. It's clearly something Respawn is capable of doing. Yet there does seem to be something holding Respawn back from pulling the trigger.

Season 4 of Apex Legends is planned to end in early May and Season 5 might or might not pick up quickly afterward. Between then and now, Respawn has several more teasers planned, based on the datamined leak. What those teasers are remains a mystery. They may be more ARES teasers or they could be something else. Titanfall fans will certainly be anxiously waiting to find out.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
