Apex Legends’ next playable character, the enigmatic hacker Crypto, might be just one day out from being added to the battle royale shooter, but that isn’t stopping Respawn Entertainment from looking beyond him and start teasing what could very well be the character that will come next.
Last week saw the release of the Apex Legends Season 3 launch trailer, which showed off much of what players can look forward to in the way of new content. This was all tied together by a lively cinematic featuring the game’s cast of playable characters interacting with one another, highlighted by some humorous dialogue between Crypto and the smart-talking Mirage.
But while most were distracted by the new map and cinematic action, eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the trailer actually includes the first official glimpse at a future addition to the roster. It happens at around 00:50 in, right as the Legends split into squads of three and prepare to leave the dropship. Even though Apex Legends will only have 11 playable characters as of tomorrow, there are four full teams accounted for.
In a “blink and you’ll miss it” appearance, an unknown twelfth figure can be seen on the far right alongside Wraith and Wattson. It’s hard to get to a good look at them, since their body is cast in shadows and their back is turned to the camera, but it is possible to make out a tall form, a thick coat and boots, and several bundled-up supplies strapped to their back.
Outside of that, there is only speculation, but luckily there’s plenty of that. The whole lineup of leaked Apex Legends characters has several Legends that could be potential fits for this mystery figure, like the trap-deploying Skunner and item-crafting Nomad. They sound like the kind of characters that would travel heavy like twelfth character appears to be, though of course only time which one will become Apex’s next new character.
It’s actually not all too surprising that Respawn would begin teasing that character this early. After all, Crypto’s first appearance was similarly in the launch trailer for Apex Legends Season 2. So if it things go the way it did for him, then players can expect more teases to come from Respawn as Season 3 unfolds, culminating in a potential unveiling right as Season 4 kicks off in a few months’ time.
Apex Legends is free-to-play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Season 3, subtitled Meltdown, begins October 1.
