Apex Legends has received a massive content update thanks to the new Chaos Theory collection event. As part of the update, lots of new event cosmetics, including Bangalore’s Cold Steel heirloom, are available along with a new Limited-Time Mode, Ring Fury, that sees ring flares appearing in the arena to menace players as they fight their way through the safe area.
Special LTMs are always welcome temporary shake-ups to Apex Legends. The previous Anniversary collection event reintroduced the Locked and Loaded LTM which gave all players a starting loadout consisting of white equipment and a Mozambique, along with blue or better gear to loot. This mode was so well received that many players want the mode’s rules to become a permanent fixture in normal Apex Legends rules.
Ring Fury is a new LTM that will be playable in Apex Legends for the duration of the Chaos Theory collection event. As with recent LTMs, Ring Fury is also a takeover mode which means it replaces the standard trios and duos modes. However, this LTM is what Respawn is calling an ‘escalating takeover’ which means the rules of the mode will change as the Chaos Theory event goes on.
Currently, Ring Fury is in its Level One rules, which offers a simple introduction to ring flares and a good opportunity for players to carefully try out the new Heat Shield survival item. During Ring Fury, all players will start with two Heat Shields already in their survival slot. As soon as players are placed into the dropship, ring flares, which are small pockets of the ring that eventually expand, will start appearing throughout the map.
During each round, ring flares will appear randomly across the arena until the current round ends. As soon as the round ends, all current ring flares will shrink and disappear, and new ring flares will begin appearing throughout the next round to accommodate for the new arena size. Any players that find themselves caught in a ring flare will take the same damage as the current ring, meaning as matches go on and the ring’s damage increases, so will the damage of ring flares.
Players can easily see ring flares on the map and mini-map due to the large red circle markers. Legends will also call out the presence or absence of any nearby ring flares, saying to watch out for an incoming ring flare or that the area is safe if none about to spawn nearby.
If a ring flare is incoming, any players looking in the right area will see an orange vertical beam shooting into the ground with a timer ticking down. Once this timer reaches zero, the ring flare will open and begin rapidly expanding. Since the ring flares grow, the red circle markers on the map show the maximum size of each ring flare, so players should avoid any red areas on the map or be ready to use Heat Shields to protect themselves from any expanding flares.
With these simple rules, Ring Fury is a relatively simple mode that does not change too much about regular play in Apex Legends, but as the mode escalates, things should get a lot more chaotic. Nintendo Switch players can also get in on the action as Apex Legends very recently launched on the handheld console.
