Respawn Entertainment's free-to-play Titanfall battle royale game, titled Apex Legends, is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. As leaked last week, Apex Legends launched in tandem with its announcement, made Monday afternoon via a livestream. Battle royale fans can download Apex Legends right now on their platform of choice and join in on the Season One action as it begins.

Apex Legends is a 60-player, squad-based online multiplayer battle royale first-person shooter. It features all of the traditional battle royale mechanics one would expect, including dropping into the map, picking up weapons and loot, and winning by surviving to the end. There are some unique features to Apex Legends, however. For one, it's a class-based battle royale, meaning every player has a unique ability and ultimate ability. The game is also designed around 3-player squads, with no solo or duo queues.

What Apex Legends doesn't feature is the giant Titans that the Titanfall series is known for. It is set in the same universe as Titanfall and uses much of the games' notable fast-paced gameplay, as well as its lore, but is otherwise a unique experience.

Reporting surrounding the project claims that after Respawn Entertainment finished Titanfall 2, it began working towards Titanfall 3. However, the team decided that the engine it was using (a modified version of Valve's Source engine) would result in a visually-aging game by the time it was released. Instead, the Titanfall 3 project morphed into what Apex Legends is now, as well as Respawn taking on the Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order project.

Finally, since it's bound to be a pressing question for many players, Apex Legends does feature microtransactions. Players familiar with Overwatch's microtransactions will find Apex Legends' system similar. Which is to say that players can otherwise acquire all content in-game via loot boxes and Apex Coin currency earned just by playing. Apex Legends also features a seasonal Battle Pass, which can be used to earn exclusive loot. Also, not all of Apex Legends' microtransactions are cosmetic. New Legends, the game's version of classes or characters, can also be unlocked or purchased.

Players can start playing Apex Legends right now, entirely for free, and start earning cosmetics and Apex Coin at no cost. Alternatively, new players can purchase the game's Starter Pack for $4.99, which includes 600 Apex Coin, a weapon skin, and a badge. The more expensive $29.99 Founders Pack includes 2000 coin, a weapon skin, 3 character skins, 3 banner frames, and a badge. Apex Coins, by themselves, cost a standard $9.99 for 1000.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
