Apex Legends just launched Season 8 but there's one feature players in the game's community are still hoping could be added in the very near future. An Apex Legends developer recently responded to those requests on Reddit, explaining the team's thinking about adding a Ranked Duos queue.

Apex Legends has had ranked matches since Season 2, but the only way to play them was in Trios. The reasoning behind this has always been that the developers believe the best and "truest" way to play the game is with three Legends. In April 0f 2020, the development team finally added Duos, but they refused to add in a ranked mode. Players have been making requests, through all sorts of different platforms, to add the feature ever since. However, even a year later, Respawn is still resisting adding in the new mode.

In a recent Reddit AMA, several members of the Apex Legends development team answered a bevy of questions, including whether there is a possibility of getting Ranked Duos. Developer Eric Canavese addressed the request directly and made it clear that for now, that queue still isn't on the horizon. Even in Season 8 of Apex Legends, Respawn believes changing the balancing from three-player squads to two-player will cause balancing problems.

Those balancing issues can have a kind of domino effect inside the game, according to the developers. Other glitches in Apex Legends could pop up due to the change in code, should the team make it. Canavese finished his answer by saying the team isn't willing to take that risk. It's perhaps most telling that he didn't add a qualifier like "at this time." Several Redditors took the comment as the developers closing the door on any chance of there being Ranked Duos at all. Others still offered hope that there might be a way to fix the balancing issues with a workaround.

Neither Canavese nor any other member of the Apex Legends team responded with any kind of clarification. For now, it appears the idea of Ranked Duos is still one Respawn simply isn't willing to try and add, with the risk of breaking the game in other ways still out there.

There should still be plenty for long-time players of the team-shooter to sink their teeth into now that Season 8 has officially arrived. One rumor floating around the community is that the game is going to be getting vehicles on several other Apex Legends maps in the very near future. At the moment, players are still left waiting and hoping a future update will bring a Ranked Duos queue to the lobby.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version set to release March 9, 2021.
