Now that Apex Legends' tenth season has been launched, it may seem like the ideal time for Respawn to get to work on the game's next-gen update. According to a recent AMA with Respawn on Reddit, the Apex Legends next-gen update is in the works and the devs are excited about it.

The now-completed AMA addressed several major questions fans had, including whether or not Seer was getting nerfed, but it's not exactly a surprise that the topic of the next-gen update was raised. The update was previously promised to arrive sometime this year, though the date now appears to be in flux. It wasn't mentioned in the AMA at all, despite there being only four months left in 2021 as of writing.

In the post, a representative of Respawn made it clear that they couldn't say anything specific about the next-gen update, but it was underway and they looked forward to finally being able to discuss it in the future. However, with no precise dates or potential obstacles being shared, it's difficult to tell where things are currently. This may be because the devs are planning to add formal enhancements as opposed to a few graphical upgrades. Apex Legends Season 10 brought a lot of changes, but it seems that both the next-gen update and cross-progression, which was also discussed during the AMA, will be taking a while longer.

Respawn was more willing to share information about cross-progression, which is apparently quite the technical, legal, and contractual challenge to complete. Not only are the developers having to get everything lined up perfectly on the hardware and software end of things, but they also have to navigate different laws for different regions and the contractual issues of purchasing on other platforms. The writers of the AMA flat-out admit that cross-progression is as big a mess at the moment as the Apex Legends hacking situation. Fans can expect to see cross-progression finally implemented sometime next year unless another delay surfaces.

As of writing, it appears that fans have been making a lot of complaints about the wait time for the next-gen update, with many posting on Twitter about the delay. Several users wanted to know what's taking Respawn so long, especially now that next-gen consoles have been out for a full year. One questioned why they bothered getting a new console to play Apex Legends on when the experience is exactly the same. Another noted that Respawn usually responds to probing questions with optimism and good cheer, regardless of how well things are going behind the scenes. However, not everyone is losing their patience with the game--Dr Disrespect has admitted that he likes Apex Legends.
